I've now played 3 games on the Vita. I was pretty immediately disappointed; the framerate issues and some of the graphical 'quirks' were glaring. I changed the fielding cam to medium which took care of most of the framerate problems. The grass still looks awful when the camera is moving at all; not sure if that's just a Reds stadium problem yet since all three games have been there. Also the player portraits that aren't pictures are horrendous. I'd rather it just be blank.
The actual gameplay is really good for pitching and hitting; I use metered pitching and everything just feels right. I skipped last year's version all around but my The Show 12 experience came right back to me. And I still chase too many low balls...
Fielding feels pretty bad. With the little screen and little joysticks we really need more fielding assist when it comes to getting under fly balls. I've had way too many times already where I knew where the ball was falling but I just sort of ran around that spot as the ball bounced past me. Throwing feels right and the range and everything of the fielders feels right. Infield fielding feels fine, it's just the outfield that I am having trouble with. Hopefully I catch on, but I feel like it wouldn't be nearly as much of a problem with a real sized controller, playing on a TV.
Quick count is amazing. It shortens the game big time (I played 3 games in an hour and a half, including one that was high scoring) and really distills it down to the fun parts. I get that it isn't for everyone but it's a big step up for me.
I've noticed a few quirks and glitches. When the screen pops up to tell you that you should pinch hit for your pitcher it freezes for anywhere from a couple seconds to half a minute, and when you can hit a button sometimes it freezes again. Also I've had, in three games, 5 plays where the ball has been batted and then pegged the pitcher. I know, small sample size, but I hope this isn't a trend.
So those are my early impressions. Overall I can't say I recommend the game unless you think you're going to be spending a LOT of time playing baseball on a handheld. It's just too inferior to the console product, especially with the very ugly field. If your only Sony gaming device is a Vita then yeah, it's worth it, but I sort of wish I'd have waited for the PS4 version since I'll bet this is going to end up getting permanently shelved once that comes out.
