I always try and stick to the default game speed for folks who also like to go and play online. It's a nightmare to have to adjust otherwise. Granted, I'm pretty sure HoF actually speeds up pitching (or so it seems?), and DD is on All-Star (or at least it was in previous years...I don't play DD).
Yeah, it takes some MAJOR adjusting and patience, but I'm finally starting to get it. I've been horendous with guys like Giancarlo Stanton who has a fast/pull swing, and I'm early a lot, even just trying to stay within myself and hit for a single.
But it's coming around.
The idea with these sliders is that we want to see some swings and misses. They have 21% of the time on swings in MLB, and it's one of the ways we see accurate pitch counts, walks, etc. as well. If we put every swing in play, well we'd be playing slow pitch softball (a fun game idea!).
I think the pounding the zone is an abnormality based on a number of factors: 1) you may have been facing an "ace" who will throw close to 70% strikes (as they typically do IRL). Also, if you're swinging and missing as much as you reported, I'd just throw it over the plate too--especially if you've demonstrated you have a good eye to lay off balls.
Make sense? It's all about the game picking up your tendencies. The same can be said for guys not walking enough batters while pitching--it has more to do with the game picking up on you throwing too many strtikes and being aggressive than anything to do with sliders. I get walks and strikeouts because I'm not afraid to pitch out of the zone on any count, and I try and keep the AI off balance.
