5 games into the 2nd season and we are off to a great start at 4-1 . Just had a look at what players are still in free agency and noticed that Ben Zobrist is just decreasing away there drastically . He is 38 so his stats are going down very quickly , contact hitting from both sides is still in the mid 80's and he can still be very useful and productive as a lead off hitter . At 38 and the way his stats are going down this would be the last year where he can be a productive bat , but most importantly the leadership he would bring to this young Jays team would be invaluable . He only wants 4.4mil for a 1 year deal , so I really think this would be a good guy to get and help us get into the playoffs this season . Any thoughts on a 38 year old Ben Zobrist coming to the Jays on a 1 year deal and giving it one last try before he considers retirement ?

If you've got it in the budget I like taking a flyer on him. A one year deal for a vet with his versatility can really be a big help to a young contending team if he produces. If it doesn't work out that money is off the books at the season's end or he could be a potential trade candidate at the deadline. There is not much risk here and potentially a nice reward. I like deals like this for a contender.

I just lost a perfect game in the 7th inning with Danny Salazar because Starling Marte bunted for a hit and Franco overran the ball. What the hell.

I don't believe in the comeback code but I do believe this game has 7th inning shenanigans. See it all the time. This just happened.

Bunt hit, single, 2-run double, strike out, RBI single, 2-run homer. Unreal.

Oh and now it's a 5-2 game and Salazar is on the hook for the loss.

Goes both ways too. Now I just tied the game in the 7th.

Line out, double, 2-run homer, strikeout, single, walk, RBI double, walk, strikeout.

EDIT:

Came back to win 8-5 on 8th inning homers from Andrew McCutchen and Bryce Harper.

For me I seem to break up no-no's being thrown against me right around then. It happens all the time where I roll into the 7th with no hits. I have yet to pitch this deep without allowing a hit.

I can give examples, in one franchise I signed Eduardo Nunez at the end of April and it's now July he is batting .300 and leading the team in SB. In another franchise I signed him and in 124 AB he is hitting .198. In that same franchise I signed Matt Kemp and through 50 games he leads the team in OPS at .886. So there is my experience with one year deals trying to squeeze some production out of an aging player.

I did it and pulled the trigger on signing Ben Zobrist on a 1 year deal worth 5.0mil. Gave him some extra $$ so he's happier . I think this is absolutely worth the 5mil for him , switch hitting machine who is very versatile and a experienced vet who will lead these young Jays back into the playoffs (hopefully) . My team ranking now overall with him coming in is 10th . So we have a very good chance . So excited for this season

We have made the decision to designate Cole Hamels for assignment. After skipping his last start due to two off days in the schedule, we decided to give him one more start to see if he could improve and he did not. Against the Pirates, he only went 4 1/3 innings allowing 7 hits, 5 runs, 3 walks, and 2 strikeouts. He is now 8-12 with a 5.98 ERA on the season. After an early season trade with the Cubs to reacquire him, it's time to move on now.

Adonis Medina will now be keeping his spot in the rotation, and Hamels spot will go to Aaron Nola who will be activated from the IL in just a few days.

We will look to trade Hamels now, but if no deal can be reached, he will be released.

We are 68-64 on the season with 4 days left in August and trail the Nationals by 3 games in the NL East. This next month is crucial including a 4 game series against the Nationals. It's division or bust as we are 7 games back for the second Wild Card spot.
