    Re: Manage only Mode Thread

Very much appreciate the input from you fellow manage only guys. I'll probably be getting the game in the mail tomorrow or Tuesday at the latest, and will be well armed to start with some great ideas based on what I've read in this thread. Keep em coming.

I rented MVP and enjoyed the gameplay, but don't see it as an option for me. I like realism and simulation and until a video game approaches the realism of OOTP, with graphics, I'll be dissatisfied with the products we have to choose from.

I just had the worst manage only experience ever. I scored only 1 run on 9 hits. Tell me, why do player chase such bad pitches? Then you choose contact, the pitcher grooves one down the middle of the plate and your batter takes the pitch.

            Re: Manage only Mode Thread

Spring Training for my Twins, MOM has begun.

4 games played and the scores have been:
            2-1, 1-2, 4-6, 11-2

playing with pre-generated pitch count of: 2 balls 0 strikes

On average, Starters with decent Stamina are pitching into the 7th inning before the stamina bar runs out. They tend to do a little worse after it wears out, most of the time, but sometimes they just keeping pitching well like they were an energizer bunny. (This applies to relievers as well, they can keep doing well, or they might get shelled after the stamina bar is gone... it does make it interesting to try and keep them in there. )

My pitchers have given up 3 homers and my Twins have hit 3 homers.
Walks and Strikeouts are both a bit low... average maybe 3 to 4 walks per team per game, and about 5 strike outs. It's off, but it's not drastically off. Besides, my Twins don't have any super K tossers, so it's not too far off, thus far.

Hits have been much more plentiful, I suspect that the 2-0 starting count has helped.
I really don't fear my hitters swinging at such terrible pitches at times, when they have 2 balls to begin with. And I don't feel the need to have to sit on pitches to raise the opposing pitchers, pitch count. But if the pitcher isn't tossing many Strikes, then, of course, it's time to wait for him to get it over the plate.

I've seen a SB bug a couple of times... which in itself is bad, because the ball gets to the 2B long before the runner gets there, but, (here's the bug) the 2B tries to apply the tag too soon, then pulls away and the stealer is safe. This is hideous in itself... BUT... it doesn't happen every time, and it kind of helps balance out the very poor MOM base stealing A.I. where my runner would be Out about 70 percent of the time, otherwise. Yes, its' cheesy, but statistically it helps, so at least in this case, 2 wrongs do make a right, so as to help to raise up the stealing percentage.

I've had no injuries yet, (knock on wood - since I did have one in one of two quick start games)

So far I'm liking what I'm seeing, on the whole.
It's not perfect, but, so far, it's fairly well balanced.

            Oh...
My hitters are getting more hits per game than last year.
Even Pujlos (who I acquired last year) couldn't hit over .280 in 80 games and hit zero homers.

This year, in four games, my team is hitting .350-something for average.
3 homers in 3 games... I think it took my guys at least 15 games to accomplish that last year.
And I've had many more near misses this year too... the old "it's going deep down the left/right field line... hooking foul!" announcements (something I'm sure everyone remembers)
Even C Ben Molina hit one off the top of the wall that bounced straight up and back into play... robbed of a homer, but such poor Power hitter, starting in his first game, that was cool.

I've been skeptical thus far, but, so far, I'm really liking it! (and leaning toward loving it)

All Star Baseball may be numero Uno!

Oh (again) the A.I. has attempeted to steal a fist full of bases on me this year, and tossed as a couple of pitch outs, and several pick off attempts on my base runners.
I do not remember last year's game attempting even half this many. So this is refreshing, too!

Tell me, why do player chase such bad pitches? Then you choose contact, the pitcher grooves one down the middle of the plate and your batter takes the pitch.

Yes, seems to happen a lot on 3-2. Grooved pitch and they stand there. A foot outside, they swing. I don't get it.
I don't believe this is what Acclaim had in mind.

I've been running an expansion franchise and have been having a horrible time socring runs - maybe its just my crappy team, but with Nevin, Konerko, Damon, Burrell, etc... I should be able to scratch a few across. Nevin was hitting .350 at the end of ST and I don't think any other regular was above .200. I played about half the games and simmed the other half. Overall the offense seems good because I have gotten tatooed a few times by the CPU(11-2, 13-1, 7-1, etc..), but my team hasn't broken the 4 run mark in any game (played or simmed). I have only hit one home run batting - a solo shot on a contact swing by Nevin.

I did have a 2004 flashback in a Spring Training game vs. Tampa Bay where I scored a run in the 2nd and Tampa scored a run in the 3rd, I managed through the 14th where the score was still tied 1-1 and the two teams had combined for 8 hits. I had other things to do, so I left the CPU playing the game out....lo and behold, 1 hour later the game was still going in the 29th inning, still 1-1. Tampa Rallied for 3 in the top of the 29th and won 4-1.

I'm going to play around with decreasing outfield range/ throwing, increasing pitcher stamina and see how that does.
