    Re: Manage only Mode Thread

    Hey fellow MOMs...

Played a bunch more Manage-only spring training games this afternoon and got some interesting results. First off, I've decided that random pitch count seems to be the best way to go, as I've gotten a decent ammount of walks. With the smart count on I got WAY too many walks-- it seems when your guy is out of juice he starts every at-bat with a 3-0 count on the batter.

I've also discovered that, similar to last season, having your guys take pitches early is beneficial later as pitcher's get much more hittable as they lose stamina. So anyway, I managed two straight shut-outs-- the Phillies and Tigers, throwing Freddie Garcia and Juaquin Benoit and near every guy in my pen. And just as I began to fear my opponents weren't going to hit, the Expos put up 10 on me the next game. It was the most satisfying beating I've ever taken.

I'm digging the manage-only mode now. I could change my mind though.

      Re: Manage only Mode Thread

I've been testing out different ways to play the manage only. I started a franchise and as each team comes up on my schedule I edit two things. I drop the outfielders range and arm ratings to C or less corresponding to how good they were rated. Andruw Jones goes from a A+ to a C and Chipper goes from a B+(I'm guessing, I don't really remember) to a D. Arm strength the same way. I did the same for my outfielders(Mets)
The other thing I did was to make all starting pitchers have stamina of A-,A or A+
Long Relievers with B,B+ or A-
Middle Relievers with C+,B-,B or B+
and Closers with C or better

I use the random generated count and am LOVING the results. Much more extra bases taken..no more saying why the heck is he still on first? Much more scoring from second on singles to the outfield, much more tagging up both to third and to home.
The pitchers seemed to get tired quickly with the gen counts and raising the stamina the way I described seems to really make it more in line.

I'm also very pleased, and that's no small trick. I'm using a generated count and it gives me pretty good variety. I tried a dozen games with the smart count, which seems to be a blend of the pitcher's control and the batter's patience. So if you have a low control pitcher, expect to see more 3-0 and 3-1 counts against patient batters. A high control pitcher will generate more 0-2 and 1-2 counts. It's pretty clever, but seems to result in more strikeouts and not as many walks as random. Also, pitchers tend to be more steady in their production with smart, where random seems to give the occasional odd result. I've had picher's duels this way, slugfests, lots of strikeouts and few walks, lots of walks and not so many strikeouts, lots of walks and strikeouts, and games with little of either. The strikeouts might still be a tad high, but I'm waiting to see how the numbers unfold. Same with stolen bases, seems to be a few too many caught stealing, but mostly on failed hit and run plays. Again, time will tell. But it's really looking good so far.

I will have to say that you do have to overlook some minor gaffes by the game, like runners not advancing when they could for a double or a run, but nothing glaring. Honestly, if it didn't happen, we'd be complaining about too many doubles and inflated scores. The only real bug that was downright stupid was when I had the bases loaded with one out and my batter hit a deep sac fly to right. The runner on second and third both held tight, but when the catch was made, only the batter on second tagged and advanced to third. The runner on third held while the runner from second also stayed and they were able to throw to third and get the double play. There was more than enough time for the runner to score, or even for the runner to retreat back to second, but they both just stood there waiting for the defense to eventually wake up and throw the ball over.

I'm very excited and encouraged so far. But the key words are, "so far". I've been down this road too many times before only to end up sorely disappointed. But I'll keep my fingers crossed, carry on, and post again on how it's going.

            Happy managing, all!

Thanks for all the input from the Manage Mode only guys. I'm still stradling the line on getting this game again because I played it last year and it was not good for MOM with the 'dead' ball era scores and the high strike out numbers. PLEASE keep the MOM impressions coming.

Agreed. I can't wait to get home and play a game or two. Your impressions have made this game worth a fly. Lets keep this thread alive, and we can share our experiences with each other throughout the entire season!

Bah... lost two consecutive games 1 to 0 to the Twins and Phillies. I don't have anything resembling a juggernaut offense, but come on...

I think I might edit the defense of the players as one person suggested. And their range, too. There were a lot of balls hit well and grounders that should've been beat out made outs by rediculous speed of light throws.
