    Re: Manage only Mode Thread

I got this game for franchise and manage only, so I'll post my quik impressions. I only played a few games, since the new Splinter Cell was calling my name!

You have some different options as far as pitch count goes. You can select the specific count you want, have no generated count, random, or smart, which was the one I chose. I'm not sure what the difference between random and smart is, I can assume that smart is based on stats and random is just that. (No, I didn't look at the manual yet! ) Also, the count generated isn't necessarily the "something has to happen on the next pitch" count. It's hard to explain, but I had counts of 1-1, 2-1, 1-2, etc. I've played other games where the count generated meant either you walked, struck out, or got on base. In this one, after the generated count, you might still have to throw a few pitches to the batter. It's not all decided on the next pitch you throw. That probably made no sense, but you'll know what I mean when you try it.

I did not see the swinging at bad pitches that others have mentioned, at least not as often as I had read about, and most swings did seem to fit the pitch count. I even had a few guys go down looking. I did have a few batters that hit a ton of foul balls, but it wasn't all of the time. I had back to back home runs by the Phillies (Thome and Burrell), and had one hit against me, but that was all in three games.

You have lots of choices on the basepaths, stealing, hit and run, all the standards. Be careful with the hit and run, had a few guys thrown out for stealing when using that one.

Overall it played pretty much like I was expecting and hoping, so thats good. There are some quirks as far as animation and stuff goes, but nothing that bothered me too much. Crowd reactions were spot on and I felt bad for the poor umps with all the heckling they took! I still need to fire up a franchise and give that a whirl, but I wanted to pass on what I picked up from the games I played so far.

Oh, by the way, scores were Phillies 6, Royals 1; Orioles 2, Pirates 0; and Phillies 3, Pirates 1.

Thanks for the impressions. Those were some fairly low scoring games, but hopefully that's not always the case. Most of it sounds pretty positive & I'm really looking forward to getting this game next week(Damn PS2 delay)

Yes, but I should have stated that with the exception of the Phillies vs Royals game (played at the Vet, RIP ) they were not full 9 inning games.

I want to add also that I did see a few walks. One by me (Thome), and 2 by the other teams. Not a whole lot for 3 games, but it's tough to judge how a baseball game will stand up without playing and simming a bunch of games, in the short term I think it looks OK. Time will tell, especially once I get the Franchise mode going.

I have MVP, which I think is a blast for gameplay and the mimor leagues. ASB will be my manage only and expansion team game, and I still actually play last years WSB, just to continue my Pirates franchise. You can never have enough baseball games!

And totally off subject, the new Splinter Cell game is fantastic online.

                  Re: Manage only Mode Thread

I picked up the game ysterday and have played a couple of manage only games - here is a quick rundown (I will play some more today and give more info):

Game 1 was the Astros vs. Cubs at Wrigley in a matchup of Clemens and Maddux. Cubs won the game 3-0, and although it looks like one of those low scoring '04 games I feel like the offense was a lot better. I (Houston) managed 10 hits, including 3 doubles but left a small village on the basepaths. Plenty of scoring chances, but Maddux, Farnsworth, and Borowski made pitches and got outs when it mattered. Cubs scored 1 in the first and 2 in the second on Clemens, including a couple of doubles in the inning. After that he settled down, but the bats couldn't push anything across - although there were plenty of chances.

Game 2 was Pirates and the Rockies (me) at the Polo Grounds. Colorado won 6-4 on the strength of 3 home runs (including an inside the parker by Royce Clayton). Once again offense seemed much better than last year - plenty of hits and socring opportunties for both teams. I got up to get something to eat and my wife actually stole 2nd with Vinny Castilla on Jason Kendall - might be a fluke or might mean that SB's are a little easier to come by this year.

                  Overall thoughts:

                  - The mode itself as far as options (power, contact, bunt.... defensive alignments, bullpen, etc...) and information (hot cold zones, hit chart, etc...) are the same as last year. This is a good thing in my estimation.

                  - Strikeouts seemed pretty good - I had some guys swing at bad pitches and take some 3rd strikes, but it wasn't really a problem for me. You see that sort of thing happen in MLB games, so no biggie as far as I was concerned. Numbers seemed pretty realistic.

                  - Walk totals were low: none in game one, two in game 2. Now, these were all #1 pitchers so that may have played a factor. I was also just using normal pitching - I'm going to try the smart generated count today and see how that comes out.

                  - Contact hitting actually resuts in hits this year - last year it seemed if you let guys hit with contact it resulted in some weak dribbler to 2nd, this year guys hit line drives - I have even doubled using the contact hitting.

                  - Good hit variety, not nearly as many pop up outs, nice mix of fly balls, ground balls, line drives, etc....

                  - Baserunning seems to be a lot more aggressive and effective - guys were scoring from 2nd on hard hit singles to the outfield. At one point Moises Alou did hit the ball to the wall down the RF line and only got a single, I was thinking that was pretty poor and then Steve Lyons jumped in and started ripping on Alou for not taking second base - pretty funny. I think it is more becuase Alou is slower than my typing, because most guys with even average speed seem to be more aggressive.

                  - Graphics look nice - there are a few strange things that happen sometimes (strange throws after outs, some player overlapping, etc...), but nothing that really detracts from the game. Stadiums are great - played a night game at the Polo Grounds and it really looked good.

                  - Broadcast cam looks great when pitching - batter faces and stances are dead one. You could have walked in and at a glance kown I was facing Sammy Sosa or Moises Alou.

                  - Lots of fun ASB "little things": bats flying out of players hands, catchers motioning for the pitcher to keep the ball down, catchers getting signs from the dugout before the pitch, etc...

                  - Fielder cam is fun in MOM - you can move the camera around while a guys chases down a ball, it gives a nice view of the stadiums. Regular cams look good too.

All in all I'm very encouraged, the offensive issues from last year appear to have been addressed and improved. Walk totals concern me, but we will see how it goes with some middle/ bottom of the rotation pitchers and how it goes with the generated counts.

I'm off for some more testing - I will let you guys know how it goes.

I'm a manage only player also. I've loved that mode of play since the old Micro League Baseball series in the 80's. It looks like ASB is the only way to go for us manage only players this year. I'm glad to see it looks like the offense has been improved. I've noticed in some other posts where a player is called safe at 2nd or home even though it's clear the ball beat the runner to the base. And beat the runner by a lot, like the runner is only halfway down the line and the throw is already at the base. Yet the runner is called safe. Is this a problem in manage only mode too? Thanks.

Thanks.
