The game sucked hardcore last year. I know, I know, its EA and its all about money.

For me, its about a great game of baseball. Yes, MVP looks good--so far, but ASB has been a cornerstone of baseball videogames for years and this build (2005) looks to be the best ever!

I may still end up buying MVP for my PS2, but its amazing to see so many PS2 'faithfuls' that are just high on EA sports and no other companies. Life is all about variety people. Dont be such fanboys for pete's sake. I was playing EA Sports games the first year they came out, but you dont see me devoting my blood and money to them.

Yup, and most regulars here will buy all the baseball games.

"Dont be such fanboys for pete's sake."

Exactly, you should read the sentence again yourself as you seem to be trying to promote ASB and dis MVP.

I would have to concur. People buy lousy games. Why? Not everyone dwells in the forums like we all do, so they say, "Hey, EA has been around for a long time" (and they assume they are the best game makes and no other developers are even worth looking at. total BS, of course).

in general, most people buy products from the company thats most popular. for example somone would buy shoes from Nike rather than Fila or a Pepsi rather than the Safeway Cola. But i think a good number of people on these boards are buying MVP this year because of the videos we've been seeing, and the new improvments of the game.

But there are still people that buy games just because its from EA. i have a friend that only buys EA Sports games and thats fine. he just plays games for fun and doesnt go through the hassel of investigating what each game has and tries to find which game is actually the best. Hes just not a hardcore game fanatic like me. there are many casual gamers that don't play video games every day like a lot of us do here. thats why EA (the most popular company) will always sell more

As for EA, the reason their games sell so well is because they makes great games. Look at the reviews of their games, and the majority are excellent.

If EA produced crap, then they wouldn't have so many million selling franchises.

Anyway, I am just saying everything is not as clear cut as you make it sound.

While Im venting on this whole MVP subject thing....

I for one was a bit taken back when I saw the poll on the front page which has MVP trouncing all other baseball games this season as the 'most wanted'. Here I thought this site was a much more open minded sim community than the IGN boards and there sits an EA game. Not that EA doens't make some great sports game, but a game, that while markedly improved last year, still was running third by my last count.

And so far this year all we have to go by is the pre-release hype machines from all the camps and this back-from-the-stink-pile-just-one-year-ago MVP game is running away with the race? I mean, even with football and basketball the poll has never been so lop-sided especially for a game still on training wheels.

Anyway, those are just my thoughts. I could care less what game people enjoy and buy ... although if the poll margins equates to sales revenue I hope we all still have choices next season as well.

That was probably the most well-written post I've seen here in months - regardless of content.

Just so happens that I agree with you, though.

EA games sale and are incredibly popular regardless of merit. Maybe the game's good, maybe it's awful - but that has very little impact on hype and sales for any of their games.

The OS guys are usually very pessimistic and quick to spot flaws in games. That's why I was so stunned when they played the MVP beta at an EA event and came back telling the boards - to a person - that it was a virtually flawless game. I mean, they were making blanket statements like that right away. That really threw me.

Now that I've seen videos of it, I can definitely say that it looks 100 percent like an EA game... the Madden/SSX/NBA Live/FIFA of baseball. In my book, that's good and bad. But obviously the OS guys only see the upside... which really surprises me. Everytime they get asked about a feature the game doesn't have or something that it doesn't do as well as other titles, they always give the same answer: "Yeah, but that doesn't really bother me at all."

I guess that's what it comes down to.

Still, it's strange that so many things don't bother critics about MVP but seemingly smaller details DO bother them about other games.

As for EA, the reason their games sell so well is because they makes great games. Look at the reviews of their games, and the majority are excellent.

If EA produced crap, then they wouldn't have so many million selling franchises.

<hr /></blockquote><font class="post">Ummm...how do you explain that crap they call Medal of Honor Rising Sun being a top 5 seller last holiday. The game was horrible. I bet you still remember the pretty CGI ads of a torpedo cutting through the water that you saw all Christmas long, though.

Re: Still dunno why MVP is getting all the press.

It's funny how so many are quick to claim that the press is "harsher" on ASB when it comes to flaws than it is with MVP. Let's break down what we've seen/heard:

                              Let's keep this civil fellas!

What exactly are MVP's flaws as of right now?

Here's what I gather from what I've read (here, and in previews):

                              -Poor collision detection
-Less accurate batting stances compared to ASB
-No player fatigue over course of a season
-Franchise mode is not as "in-depth" compared to others
-Over the top HR celebrations (Fireworks)

                              Now, for ASB:

-SOME quirks with Fielder cam (although many like it!)
-Still slow reaction times by fielders ("crouch" seems still there, although to less of an extent)
-Crowds still aren't as reactive as we want
-Hit Variety isn't as much as in MVP

Now, let's post some things that are unique and done well in each franchise:

                              MVP
                              -Throwing meters
                              -Pitching interface is very interactive
                              -Individual follow throughs on swings
-Player animations - best we've seen (although MLB might have something to say about that!)
                              -PIP Baserunning with controlled slides
-Runners hit with the ball in fair territory are declared out(!)
                              -Playable Minors w/ Licensing

                              ASB
-Most in depth Franchise includes Rule 5 and Arb.
-Slide step while pitching (LOVE that one)
                              -First to include "Future Throw"
-TWIB Scenarios similar to NCAA Football
-Best sig. batting and pitching stances.
                              -BTP/Broadcast cam is AMAZING
                              -Best HR collision detection

I'm sure there are others, but that's a quick list. You can see that MVP just has so many great factors that are in direct relation to GAMEPLAY (what we're always touting here at OS) that it's no wonder WHY MVP is getting the press it is. That doesn't knock ASB... it just seems like EA is offering more. ASB looks like the more realistic representation of baseball... it has things that when you WATCH IT, look like it's closer than MVP is.... but (and I'm just guessing here...) MVP is more fun to play.

Fun AND realism... isn't that all it comes down to? I'm sure there are many more having fun with MVP than ASB... without sacrificing realism. Sure, there's fireworks and all this other stuff... but from Steve's Impressions... realism isn't being sacrificed.

Ugh... while it sounds like I'm "pimping" MVP... I'm not. Just trying to give a little breakdown as to why things are being pushed the way they are.

Re: Still dunno why MVP is getting all the press.

It's funny how so many are quick to claim that the press is "harsher" on ASB when it comes to flaws than it is with MVP. Let's break down what we've seen/heard:

                                Let's keep this civil fellas!

What exactly are MVP's flaws as of right now?

Here's what I gather from what I've read (here, and in previews):

                                -Poor collision detection
-Less accurate batting stances compared to ASB
-No player fatigue over course of a season
-Franchise mode is not as "in-depth" compared to others
-Over the top HR celebrations (Fireworks)

                                Now, for ASB:

-SOME quirks with Fielder cam (although many like it!)
-Still slow reaction times by fielders ("crouch" seems still there, although to less of an extent)
-Crowds still aren't as reactive as we want
-Hit Variety isn't as much as in MVP

Now, let's post some things that are unique and done well in each franchise:

                                MVP
                                -Throwing meters
                                -Pitching interface is very interactive
                                -Individual follow throughs on swings
-Player animations - best we've seen (although MLB might have something to say about that!)
                                -PIP Baserunning with controlled slides
-Runners hit with the ball in fair territory are declared out(!)
                                -Playable Minors w/ Licensing

                                ASB
-Most in depth Franchise includes Rule 5 and Arb.
-Slide step while pitching (LOVE that one)
                                -First to include "Future Throw"
-TWIB Scenarios similar to NCAA Football
-Best sig. batting and pitching stances.
                                -BTP/Broadcast cam is AMAZING
                                -Best HR collision detection

I'm sure there are others, but that's a quick list. You can see that MVP just has so many great factors that are in direct relation to GAMEPLAY (what we're always touting here at OS) that it's no wonder WHY MVP is getting the press it is. That doesn't knock ASB... it just seems like EA is offering more. ASB looks like the more realistic representation of baseball... it has things that when you WATCH IT, look like it's closer than MVP is.... but (and I'm just guessing here...) MVP is more fun to play.

Fun AND realism... isn't that all it comes down to? I'm sure there are many more having fun with MVP than ASB... without sacrificing realism. Sure, there's fireworks and all this other stuff... but from Steve's Impressions... realism isn't being sacrificed.

Ugh... while it sounds like I'm "pimping" MVP... I'm not. Just trying to give a little breakdown as to why things are being pushed the way they are.
