        Re: New ESPN Baseball Developer

I think ESPN MLB 2k5 is going to be a big turning point in this series, even if Blue Shift stayed on as the developer.

Last year, MVP just demolished ESPN in graphics, and to the casual fan, they go for eye candy. Also, it does really keep you into the gaming experience.

However, it was the collision detection that really killed the game for me last year. My infielder could be running left with his glove at normal position as the ball rolls on the ground by him .... then all of the sudden *BANG!*, the ball is in his glove. The game felt unfinished with the crowds and more (although the crowds looked good IMO).

We'll definitely see an overhaul in graphics (with this Triple Pass Rendering stuff, all the ESPN 2k games look BEAUTIFUL), and the core gameplay is pretty tight (like many said before me). It's just a matter of taking that extra step.

I think this year will be VERY close for best baseball game. But whoever wins, we all win.
        NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
        NFL - Buffalo Bills
        MLB - Cincinnati Reds

IMO, MLB is still the one that lags far behind NBA, NFL, and NHL in terms of player models.

The player models in the three latter games are great. The ones in MLB 2k look like trash.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Hopefully they can pull ESPN baseball together and make it the game many of us think it could be.
I played ESPN College Hoops, and if that is the kind of work that ESPN Baseball will have, NO THANKS. Sorry, but ESPN College Hoops just isn't a good game (and I've been video gaming since the late 70's, so I _DO_ know a good game from a bad one), and to endorse its developer for another sports genre product would be a huge mistake. Perhaps that mistake has already been made.

Whether it be a fielding, batting, running animation, something will not be done "perfectly".That goes for football, basketball, hockey, etc.. Some people let their negative perceptions (or someone else's negative perception) sway their opinions on a game. While I'm not saying ESPN was the best baseball game ever made, it just amazes me what can kill a game in people's opinion. I would rather have a bad swing animation than power hitting lefties hitting balls only 300 ft. But alas, that's my opinion. And yeah, gameplay is important. Case in point LIVE 2002. Graphics weren't bad, but gameplay sucked.
Nice to have a good samaritan around, but your thinking is flawed. The kind of thinking that is negatively affecting the ESPN Baseball product. Them switching developers ought to be a red flag. True, it may be that baseball is such a complex game (so much so that it won't be emulated perfectly), but there are developers out there who care enough about it to think that it deserves more than a passing glance in terms of trying to make an emulation of it resemble the real thing.

According to Fatpitcher who worked for Blue Shift, they wanted to fix the swing animations, but they were not allowed. Someone up higher thought it wasn't that important.

I know Blue Shift was contracted out to do the game, but I don't know by who. Possibly VC? So it's possible VC was the problem with that.

I don't know what to expect this year. I'll get both ESPN and MVP and make my choice from that. They were the only games that got any playtime from me last year. ESPN got the most since MVP had some problems that ruined the game for me and ASB didn't appeal to me. Too many issues with that game as well.

I know we'll never see the perfect baseball game, but some of the issues/bugs/glitches we see amaze me. I know software development and how it works (I work for a software development company), but I can't excuse some of these issues with games.
