All I have to go on is MANY years of gaming experience, but here is my prediction of the future in sports gaming (and likely other genres): There will never be a perfect video game, for two reasons:

          (1) fans will always want more and more. If we were all playing with VR equipment, SOMEONE out there would over-dose on SOMETHING to get that "added experience". Some fans you just can't please with a game alone.

          (2) if there WERE a perfect video game, the market would be turned on its heels. The standard of quality would be so high that many development teams would jump ship. Is the technology and ability there to create that elusive "perfect sports game"? Absolutely, it is. Unfortunately, while we fans are always chasing that perfect video game, game publishers are always chasing that revenue stream. The two aren't compatible.

The only two pieces of evidence I have to support these two statements are:

          (1) myself. I'm an "unhappy sports gamer", though I do think the games are closer to being of the high quality that __I__ want. I'm griping less and less every year.

          (2) We see EVERY year where features that were in games years before are now removed. Don't believe for a second that it's a design limitation, or memory-saving issue. It's a marketing issue. It happens everytime. About two laters the feature is put back in the game as a "New and Cool Feature!".

Just like EA's "new" picture in picture baserunning screen.

They seem to be doing a good job with the other games, so hopefully they'll be able to patch up the weak spots in baseball for next season. It's definitely not going to be easy for them, though. A lot of the code base needs replacing, either because it's legacy code that wasn't very good, or because it was licensed (Renderware, etc.)."
I'm not sure if that's a good thing or bad.
When they took over the NHL series, 2K3, which was done by Treyarch, was a masterpiece. In fact, many fans of the 2K series are still playing it. But when Kush made 2K4 it was horrible. But they rebounded in a big way with 2K5. The skating animations are still horrible and there are a number of non-gameplay related bugs, but it's a great, great hockey sim.

I hope that it doesn't take them a year to figure out the baseball series.
