Pirates get: Larry Bigbie and Mike Lowell (thank God the O's won't get stuck with him)

I like this trade better. Ward can play the OF, so Melvin Mora wouldn't be forced into LF, as was rumored with the Mike Lowell acquisition. Daryle Ward would probably play LF primarily against righties, and Eli Marrero & B.J. Surhoff would get quite a few starts against lefties.
You don't want Ward in the OF. He's probably the slowest player in MLB. He used to play OF when he was younger and a little more nimble, but no way now. The only balls he's catching are ones right to him. Plus he hasn't played OF in over 2-3 years.

I also don't see why the Pirates would even consider this. Their only 1B is Ward (Craig Wilson is out with a broken hand) so that leaves them empty at that position.

Not to mention for a team trying to get younger, the acquisition of Lowell makes no sense. Especially since he'd only be a stopgap until Jose Bautista is ready at 3B (tearing up AA right now).

I think it's safe to say Ward would be primarily used as a DH, or at 1st base if traded.

I like the deal to get Burnett. I don't mind seeing Julio leave, and I like Bigbie a lot, but we have players in the minors that are of the saem mold, and could end up better than Biggs (Majewski, Markakis). I would hate to see Penn leave, especially if Burnett doesn't sign an extension, but the O's have been stockpiling pitching in recent drafts, so it may not be too bad...

New York Times (registration required): "The Yankees would welcome a proven starter like Juan Pierre of Florida or Randy Winn of Seattle. But with Cashman's reluctance to trade prospects, a more realistic acquisition could be a lesser outfielder like Eric Byrnes of Colorado or Philadelphia's Endy Chavez, who have the speed to cover center field and would not hurt much on offense."

I like any of the 4 mentioned players listed, all of them have a ton of speed. Like he said, it wouldn't be that bad on offense with Bernie coming off the bench. Hopefully the Yankees can ship Womack out in whatever deal they pull off.

I think the deal would be contingent on AJ signing an extension.

I agree. Ward would be fine as a DH. His only problem is that he's been struggling an awful lot lately. IMO he's run down right now.

I just don't see why the Pirates would agree to this trade. They get nothing out of it that they need. The Pirates aren't in a salary dump situation this year (as they have been in the past) so it doesn't make much sense.

I like him for the simple fact he didn't touch home in the ALDS two years ago

Joking aside, I like him for the same reasons you listed. Reminds me of Trot Nixon, except younger, faster, and plays better D....

The Red Sox just made a small move

                    - DFA'd Alan Embree
                    - Traded Scott Cassidy to SD for Adam Hyzdu.

Dumping Embree may have been the best move the Red Sox have made in the last 5 years. :y4:

                        Another move:

Red Sox trade minor leaguers Chip Ambres and Juan Cedeno to KC for Tony Graffanino.

                            Might be something interesting:

For those discussing the 3 way trade rumor with the O's, Marlins and Pirates. Darryl Ward sat out today. He was also removed last night after 3 AB's. Rob Mackowiak who's a jack of all trades played 1B in his absence.

I don't know if Ward was injured and I'm purely speculating, but it's very odd that he was pulled early last night and didn't start today.

Or maybe I missed the fact that the Pirates are playing a doubleheader today.

If that proposed 3 way trade goes through, the Pirates GM should be fired ASAP.

You're giving up a starting OF and one of your best starting pitchers for a player that has flamed out. Even if 75% of his salary is covered by the Marlins it's still a bad deal.
