If this does happen, what's the scoop on Bigbie?

I was told by an Oriole's fan on another board (who might or might not be a moron) that Bigbie would be the best outfielder the Pirates have. I mentioned Jason Bay and the conversation stopped from her side.

Now, I don't know much about Bigbie, but I do know that he's no Jason Bay. Is Bigbie just a guy who needs a chance to play regularly and that's why this person thinks so highly of him or is he really a below average MLB outfielder (by the looks of his numbers).

Well, I'm not going to pretend I'm an expert on Mr. Bigbie but the impression I get from numbers and some other people is that he's about a middle of the road prospect. Decent average and some pop in the bat. The thing is that we have some good young OF's in AAA and they should be ready soon (Duffy, McLouth plus even Rajai Davis at AA). We have a couple of average/speed hitters in the system already. The one glaring hole the team has and will continue to have in a big bat to drive in runs. One big bat at either 1B, 3B or OF.

Now some kind of trade for like Ryan Howard would be ideal, but I don't know if Redman, Wells and Lawton have enough trade value to bring what we need in return.

Well, I'm not going to pretend I'm an expert on Mr. Bigbie but the impression I get from numbers and some other people is that he's about a middle of the road prospect. They predict Bigbie to eventually put up Paul O'Neill type numbers, around .280, 20 HR's, 70-90 RBI, and some steals. Bigbie biggest issue now is he is falling in love with hitting opposite field.

ESPN said that Boston is interested in JC Ramero of the Twins. As a Twins fan, the only trade I would accept is JC Ramero for David Ortiz, but that won't happen. I think ESPN said someone like Bill Miller(I am not sure if thats his name).

Latest on the Burnett/O's deal:

- The deal is on hold due to Peter Angelos not wanting to take on a majority of Mike Lowell's contract. The O's wanted Florida to take back Sidney Ponson to account for some of the money, and the Fish balked at the idea.

- The deal is also back to just Baltimore and Florida.

- There is also the possibility of Steve Kline being added into the deal, which would account fro about $2 million of Lowell's deal.

- The extension for Burnett would be 5 years, $48 million

- The deal now looks like this:

Orioles get

AJ Burnett
Mike Lowell
Eric Reed
Matt Perisho
$7 million for Lowell's contract

Marlins get

Hayden Penn
Larry Bigbie
Jorge Julio
Steve Reed
Steve Kline

- The Marlins would then ship Bigbie to Pittsburgh for Mark Redman, straight up.

If Steve Reed is going to be included in this trade then the trade would have to happen within the next 4 days, Reed was designated for assignment by the Orioles 6 days ago which gave them 10 days to trade or release him and with every team looking for bullpen help it's doubtful that he would accept a minor league assignment.

I have heard the Pirates would like to send Matt Lawton to Florida along with Redman. The Dodgers and Cubs are also rumored to be interested in Lawton.

That deal is off, because from what I read Ponson was supposed to be shipped to the D-rays for T. Miller, but Ponson is a Nevin "Yes" away from being a Padre.

It really does stink that they had to kill the deal because this would have made the Orioles pitching staff better witn Burnett in there. If they don't make a good trade for starting pitching, they won't win the division.

1. I wish this entire Burnett saga would just come to a conclusion. I'm tired of reading and speculating about it. July 31st can't come soon enough IMO. Hopefully we'll get a resolution to all these rumors and bullcrap spreading around.

2. I think it should be noted that all potential buyers in the Burnett sweepstakes seem to be proceeding with extreme caution. Florida seems to be asking for the moon and the stars in return for Burnett, a guy who has some very real questions to him. All of the candiates do NOT seem to be willing to part with a package that includes:

- Major League ready young starting pitcher (Arroyo, McCarthy, Penn)
- potential closer now used in a setup role (Julio, Marte)
- top prospect (A. Sanchez, McCarthy)
- swallowing any more than half of Lowell's contract

This is simply asking for too much in return for A.J. Burnett, who in all likelihood will be with his new team for a measly 2 months. He's pretty good, but I don't think he's worth that much, and more importantly, the potential buyers don't either.

3. It only takes 1 irrational thought or unexpected occurrence to change how this will ultimately go down.
As it stands right now, this will likely go up until the deadline, as a game of chicken, when Florida will likely cave on their Lowell demands (or some other demand)..

OTOH, when you're dealing with a guy like Kenny Williams of CWS, there's every reason to believe he'll pull the trigger and swallow the entire enchilada as a panicky move if he thinks his current SP isn't good enough to win the WS.
Of course, being comfortably in first place with about a 95% chance of making the playoffs might have tempered his impulsiveness a bit. I still think Chicago will end up with Burnett when it's all said and done...

Last year it was Randy Johnson, this year it's Burnett, next year it will be someone else. Wee see this every year, 1 team has a decent starting pitcher for trade and everyone tries to get him, it's nothing new.

I agree that the Marlins are asking too much for Burnett and the adding Mike Lowell does not help. If the Marlins want to get any kind of a good deal for Burnett they might have to take Lowell out of the deal.

It is a sad state of things when a pitcher with a sub-.500 career record who has never made 30 starts in a season is not only the hottest commodity at the trading deadling, but will be the most sought after free agent as well.
