Hey man I think you have the Phillies and the Mets confused. The Mets did make the playoffs in 1999 and 2000, remember?

I'm still pickin the Braves until they blow it but I do think the Mets will be challenging AT LEAST for the wild card with this team.

They also made the WS more recently than the Braves... I guess by "tanking" he meant not winning the division because we have "tanked" by that division by choking away opportunities to win the division in September

          Re: Wagner to the Mets!!!!!!!

I agree with you about the Braves. But losing Leo will hurt their pitching this year. I think right now the Mets, with the moves they've made to this point, have to be the favorites. Last year I thought the Marlins would overtake them but the Braves found a way. You gotta put the Mets behind St. Louis right now as the best in the NL. And if Omar is able to move some contracts and bring in Manny. Forget it. Next year Glavine, Matsui, Floyd and Trachsel come off the books. Thats more money than what came off this year. The Mets can afford Manny's contract. We can replace those guys with like Seo, Bannister, Hernandez and Diaz. I won't be disappointed if we don't get Manny, cause we're still in great shape, but if we do, It's over.

P.S. You can tell these Philly fans are pissed that we took their closer!

Considering them favorites for the NL East is funny enough but this is borderline delusional. We heard the same things last winter when the Mets acquired Pedro and Beltran...zzzzZZZZzzzz. Are the Mets an improved team? Definitely but talking about them being favorites for anything is taking it too far.

I dont want Manny and now with a closer and Delgado we dont need him. Keep Millege because after next year Floyd will be done and you can move him into his spot. Now all we need is a catcher. I hope we sign Hernandez soon to fill that spot.

Actually, no. I stated above that I didn't want him at that price or for those years. Given the state that the Phillies' payroll is in, it didn't make sense for us to spend 10% of our money on a guy who's going to pitch about 80 innings a season at most when we're already on the hook for half of Thome's contract, Abreu's big contract, Burrell, Bell, Lieberthal ($7.5M ugh), etc. Plus, giving an expensive 4-year deal to a 34-year-old who's missed 2 out of the previous 6 seasons with arm troubles isn't exactly a great idea, imo.

I hear we're going hard after Tom Gordon now. I like him as a setup guy, but I sure don't want him closing....

I dont recall anyone saying that last year. I do recall people saying that could be .500 or better or even contend for a wild card which they did. So I dont know, maybe thats what they were saying in Mizzou not out in the big city. Compare the Mets lineup as of NOW to anybody's in the NL. Who's better? San Diego? Houston? San Fran? PHILLY?

I know that Wagner has had some injury problems the past couple of years but at the end of the 4-year deal Wagner will be the same age as John Smoltz is now.

The Mets had a pretty solid lineup last year and look where it got them, all they've added so far is Delgado, which is a solid pick up, but is he going to make *THAT* much of a difference??? That signing screams Mo Vaughn all over again IMO. Anyways, the Mets starting pitching outside of Pedro is still relatively weak...gonna need them to really step up for either Wagner or Delgado to have a profound impact next year. The Mets are an improved club but this talking about them being favorites for anything right now is taking it too far, gotta wait and see what the other clubs do before making ridiculous predictions.

I thinkthey are better then the Braves starters. Plus your bullpen does not have a closer. Oh I forgot Danny Kolb. Wagner had a supper low ERA playing in Coors fild East. Look at the Mets Starters. Pedro, Glavine ( one of the best pitchers the second half in baseball) Benson, Seao, Trachsall. I will give you Smoltz is great after that you do have question marks. I also am a fair Met's fan and must say the Braves have been the Kings in the East. Untill the Mets do it on the field this does not mean anything. That said adding Carlos, Wagner and a good catcher will make it interesting.

San Diego shouldn't be there. Their lineup stinks until they all prove they can drive in runs.

                            How about the Cardinals?

When I look at this deal, compared to the BJ Ryan deal, I think this is horrible, locking down a 35-year-old guy. I don't necessarily like either deals, but the Ryan deal is a hell of a lot better compared to the Wagner deal. At least BJ's still got the age.
