Re: Official Trade Deadline Thread- Rumors, Transactions and Your Own Crazy Ideas

Definitly don't like the move. I see McCarthy as a Mike Mussina clone (the Mike Mussina of the past few years who's a great number 2 pitcher and a borderline number 1 at times, not the hard thrower we saw with Baltimore) and I wouldn't give him up for a rent-a-player. The biggest hindrance to the White Sox right now is their starting pitching. Trading away McCarthy takes away depth and a possible replacement for Vasquez or Garcia if they continue to struggle. Also, their defense gets worse as Podsednik likely would move to centerfield where he becomes almost a liability and Soriano takes over in left. Their lineup would certainly improve but I don't like the trade-off.

I do like the MacDougle trade. He's not a sure thing but definitly a risk worth taking. He's the type of pitcher that could come out of no where and get hot just in time for the playoffs.

I will believe it when I see it.

Who else would the Sox be giving up? Brian Anderson?

Yeah, I don't think I buy this one either. Doesn't make sense for the White Sox at ALL except for "preventive" purposes, like others have suggested.

Seems to make sense to me.

Brian Anderson is a great prospect, but he has been over his head since coming to the big leagues. Guy has been hovering around the Mendoza line since day one.

McCarthy is a good prospect as well, but as long as the White Sox have Garcia, Garland, Vazquez, Buehrle, and Contreras, he really doesn't fit with this team.

I have no comments on the trade until I see who is in this trade...If it involves both McCarthy and Anderson..screw that

I realize that, but I was talking more along the lines of specific needs for the ChiSox. They have been lacking with pitching, not necessarily offense. They're already stacked with bats. Then again, who's gonna help out the defending champs with more pitching?

And maybe they could add Soriano and then even ship him for pitching?

It is possible. Don't forget Mike Piazza, Cliff Floyd, etc.

That's definitely true too. I remember that's how we ended up getting Mike Hampton from the Rockies. They traded him to Florida first, then we ended up dealing with them.

Good point. What would the Sox want with a player who is in the top 3 in all of baseball. Especially, for a guy who's been overwhelmed at the plate and is at best an average centerfielder and a guy who hasn't been able to crack a rotation thay boasts 3 5.00+ ERAs, 1 4.00+ ERA and 1 over 3.50.

                        1. What are the chances that the White Sox resign Soriano? You know a ton of teams are going to throw big contracts at him after his amazing career year (hmm...a career year during a contract year??? Always have to be careful with those types of players....).

                        2. All the advanced defensive metrics and various scouts (also Ozzie Guillen for that matter...) are saying that Anderson has been a great defensive centerfield. Who knows if he'll ever become a great ML hitter but he definatly has some great skills.

                        3. McCarthy is only 22 years old, has great stuff, pretty much dominated in the minors at a very young age, and showed that he's the real deal last year with the Sox. This year he struggled (understandable for a young 2 year pitcher) but lately he's been great again. Bottom line: He's probably going to be a great player for years to come and he's going to be cheap for a while.

I think there is a very good chance Soriano stays in Washington. The Expos/Nationals organization has not had a player to build around since Vladimir Guerrero and Soriano gives them that. He has shown he can hit in RFK with power (17 HR's at home, the rest of the team has hit 31) and he's becoming a player fans will pay to see.

Michael Lerner officially became owner of the Nationals today giving the team it's first real owner in more than 3.5 years and though they say they want to build from within it would certainly help to have a legitimate slugger to build around.

The Nats also announced today that Jose Guillen will have season-ending elbow surgery taking away any chance the team had at trying to trade him. Guillen is also a free agent at the end of the season and definitly will not be back in Washington next season.

Kenny Williams came out and said McCarthy is going nowhere.

So translated from GM speak to regular terms, he'll be in a Nats uniform pretty soon.

Latest rumor concerning the Twins is that we're interested in Carlos Lee. I'm not sure who we would have to give up, but putting him in the #4 hole will only make Mauer and Morneau better.

I think I heard Julio Lugo was a late scratch for the D-Rays, speculation is that he's been traded to the Jays.
