Your right here is what Melvin said during a press conference after the trade:
Melvin's exact word was that they weren't "willing" to trade Mench, not that they simply weren't looking to trade him

          - don't look for Mench to be gone anytime soon, Melvin kept alluding to the positives of having him under their control for the next 2 and a half years

          - there were 5 other teams with offers on the table, Melvin specifically mentioned the Angels and how they were the one team we were able to reach last night to let them know Lee was gone

          - all the other offers were for prospects who would be ready in mid to late 2007 or 2008

          - liked this deal because he was already familiar with the personalities we'd be acquiring...said you always wonder what kind of personalities you're getting back...in this deal he knew he was getting back "good" guys

          - made it clear that these players are here to help this year and next...including Cordero who is an arm that normally isn't available...expect that option to be picked up

          - spoke of a conversation with another GM who asked if we could afford to keep these guys, Melvin basically said yeah it's not a problem and that made the trade a decent return in that GM's eyes (so long as we could afford to keep these guys)

          - a reporter asked about this freeing up money for other moves, Melvin dismissed that notion pointing out that Cordero and Mench's salaries pretty much match the salary of Lee

          - Melvin's trade proposal was Lee for Mench and Cordero straight up...Texas refused since Lee is a rental and Matthews Jr. is a FA at year's end as well...Texas needed an OF in return that they could keep beyond this year, and thus demanded Cruz...Melvin wanted Mench and Cordero bad enough that he added the Cruz for Nix and young Cordero aspect of the trade to make the deal happen

          - Melvin says there are deals out there they are considering that add as much as 3.5 million in salary

          - they hope Mench and Cordero are here for tonight's game but they are having airline issues and it could be a problem

          - said the Brewers actually talked to Washington about adding Soriano but it didn't work out...Brewers still willing to spend

Rumor has it, Buster Olney will be debuting his new "hot" deal...

Willis and Cabrera for the Portland Sea Dogs and the rights to their stadium. Since Florida can't get together the funding... this could work.

The local Brewers telecast along with the official Brewers website is claiming that the Brewers are currently talking with the Phillies about a trade that would send 3B David Bell to the Brewers for a minor leaguer.

I guess Melvin still thinks he can win it, since it would only be a two month rental. Wouldn't be a bad move, assuming the minor leaguer isn't a top prospect. Bell's a decent bat, and the Brewers could use some IF help.

Yost claims that Turnbow is back as the Brewers closer. Horrible decision, he's way too loyal sometimes. Give it to Cordero

Anyways, the Bell trade is official, David Bell is a Brewer. I didn't catch who's being sent to Philly yet...

I don't watch many Brewers game but I don't understand why the Brewers fans are so quick to throw Turnbow under the bus. He had an amazing last year and outside of the last month, has been pretty solid all year long. He gives up 2 runs the entire month of June and has a horrible July and now everyone wants to kill this guy. The guy saved 40 games with a 1.74 ERA last year.

And to the guy who said that Cordero is washed up? Are you kidding me? The guy has been pretty darn good lately pitching in a bad park. The only reason that he isn't the closer is because Otsuka is doing so well.

I haven't been watching any ESPN coverage, but from what I just read on SOSH, Olney said Tejada will be moved this weekend.

                          Possibly to Texas.

Cause... Ya know... They need more hitting.

Minor league pitcher Wilfrido Laureano. No idea about him... doubt he's much, though.

Was there really no place for Betemit to play? I saw him play against philly last sunday and he made a tremendous play.

Oh well at least the Braves get bullpen depth.
