SI reports that the Yankees are close to a deal with Andy Pettitte.

Only one source, doesn't mean it's going to happen, but I'm hoping for it.

          Pettitte?

He was great 2 seasons ago, and pitched very well down the stretch last year.

I see us signing him if he decides not to retire. I heard on ESPN he should decide if he is going to retire or not by Christmas.

Looks like Greg Maddux is a Padre now. 1 year with a 2nd year option.

All the Padres need now is a second basemen (unless Walker re-signs), a left-fielder, and a 5th starter.

Left fielders the Padres have expressed interest in are Adam Dunn and Pat Burrell, although both are unlucky. Jose Cruz Jr., who signed yesterday, figures to play the 4th outfielder role along with Terrmel Sledge.

The Padres have also expressed interest in Manny Ramirez, however, they are not willing to part with young staff ace Jake Peavy.

Geoff Jenkins is a possibility for the Padres if the Brewers do not trade Kevin Mench (possible deal w/Phillies that would send Mench for Jon Lieber). Jenkins would play RF with Giles shifting to LF.

I think it is very likely that Mark Loretta returns to the Padres, the Red Sox have shown little interest in bringing him back and Loretta has said he would like to return to San Diego. Tony Graffanino is another possibility.

David Wells could return for 1 more season as the 5th starter. Wells has not officially retired and said he is open to playing next year and did a decent job for the Padres in september.

                  Manny is not going anywhere.

More from the Winter Meetings, the Padres are also now involved in the Jason Schmidt sweepstakes with the uncertainty of Wells returning for one more season. Ronnie Belliard has also emerged as a canidate for second base, a list that includes former Padres Mark Loretta and Todd Walker.

The Red Sox and Dodgers have discussed Manny and it has been reported that the Sox asked for Brad Penny, John Broxton and James Loney. The interest in Billingsly and Kemp could be for nothing more than as alternates for one of the other players.

The Pittsburgh Pirates may be a player for Sexson, they are looking for a slugger to play 1B and since they have to do it thru trade they are willing to part with a couple of their young starters.

                          Re: Winter Meetings thread

General Manager Bill Stoneman and his Braves counterpart, John Schuerholz, met at baseball's winter meetings for the second straight day, but Atlanta is holding firm in its request for a front-line pitcher, preferably setup man Scot Shields.

The Angels hoped the Braves' interest in utility player Chone Figgins and first baseman Casey Kotchman was an indication Atlanta would be willing to make a deal that would not cost the Angels a pitcher.

The Braves have discussed sending LaRoche to Pittsburgh for closer Mike Gonzalez, who had a 2.17 earned-run average in 54 games and was 24 for 24 in save opportunities last season, and are determined to upgrade their bullpen, so they don't want to give up their best bargaining chip — LaRoche — without getting a pitcher.
Florida Marlins General Manager Larry Beinfest strongly denied Angels owner Arte Moreno's claims that the teams had a deal for slugger Miguel Cabrera in place twice in November, only to have the trades fall apart because the Marlins increased their demands at the last minute.

Add Milledge to the A's for Blanton rumor mill. I still think the Chisox and Mets will be doing something soon.

The Pirates don't want a RH though because their lineup is already RH heavy.

Littlefield has also stated he won't give up one of his starting pitchers (Duke, Snell, Maholm or Gorzelanny). I don't know what he thinks he can give up to get this young, LH power hitting 1B/RF, but he has stated he doesn't want to part with those starting pitchers.

Well looks like Lilly is as good as gone. JP Ricciardi is pretty much getting fed up with the waiting. The Jays submitted their last offer of 4 yrs/40 mil. Lilly's agent more or less let it be known that the Cubs offer is even MORE lucrative.

Oh well all that means is that the Jays are more then likely going to be gil Meche's new home.
