    Re: Winter Meetings thread

Jose Cruz Jr., who signed yesterday, figures to play the 4th outfielder role along with Terrmel Sledge.

I am soooooooooooooo thrilled to pencil in Sledge as a starting leftfielder in my little lineup card as I watch them play. Somebody shoot me.

Terrmel Sledge is slated as the LF until the Padres get someone. My feeling is that he'll be the 5th outfielder or even traded. He was a throw in in the Rangers trade last season and if you go by the moneyball philsophy, he really doesn't fit in.

But it's a little ironic how people here in San Diego pine about a "youth movement" and wanting young players play, but when a guy like Terrmel Sledge, who had a pretty solid rookie season before suffering a major injury, might have a chance to play, people complain.

I still want a big bat, but I'm not so optimistic that it'll come this season and if it does, it'll have to be Kevin Kouzmanoff or a breakout season by either Gonzalez or Greene.

Pretty pathetic but at the same time, there were only really only two free agent power bats this offseason and is it worth trading away Peavy given the ridiculous contracts such pitchers like Padilla and Eaton have gotten to fill out three rotation spots?

From what I've read, the Red Sox have asked for three of the Dodgers' top six prospects.

I don't see how we could possibly give up our potential closer either.

No, Dave Roberts in left would have filled the bill for me. We pick up Cruz and a 41 year old pitcher?????

Don't sleep on Kouz... He had pretty good power when he came up for us last September even if the average wasn't there... I think he can be a star for the Padres.

              • The market for free-agent right-hander Eric Gagne is intensifying, according to a source with knowledge of the reliever's situation.

              • The Mariners' interest in free-agent left-hander Barry Zito could stem from a growing realization that they can not sign free-agent right-hander Jason Schmidt, who is high on the Dodgers' wish list.

              • Rival executives continue to buzz about the size of the Rangers' expected offer to Zito, estimating that he will get a six-year proposal between $94 million and $102 million.

              • Never mind the talk of the Mariners acquiring Manny Ramirez; the team remains focused on adding two starting pitchers, most likely through free agency.

              • Larry O'Brien, the agent for the left-handed Lilly, said early Tuesday night that he is continuing to negotiate with four teams — the Cubs, Blue Jays, Yankees and Giants.

              • The Astros made an offer for Rockies right-hander Jason Jennings, but the talks sputtered when the Astros refused to include right-hander Jason Hirsh.

              • The Devil Rays are getting significant trade interest in second baseman Jorge Cantu, who missed six weeks with a broken left foot early in the season and never regained full mobility.

              • The Cubs and Rangers are pursuing free-agent center fielder Kenny Lofton.

              • The Brewers' outfielder most in demand is Kevin Mench; about eight teams have expressed trade interest. Brewers reliever Derrick Turnbow also is getting play, and he's "highly available" according to rival executive.

              • Free-agent right-hander Vicente Padilla received four-year interest from the Cardinals and Cubs before agreeing to his three-year, $34 million deal with the Rangers.

Baltimore has already moved on from a couple plans of their own, most notably one that involved a huge trade with Atlanta. In a potential deal first reported by The Baltimore Sun, the O's were expected to send second baseman Brian Roberts and pitching prospect Hayden Penn to the Braves for Marcus Giles and Adam LaRoche.

That deal allegedly came close to completion but fell through and is thought to be beyond resuscitation.

Two different Braves sources have indicated that the Braves were very close to completing a deal that would have sent both LaRoche and Giles to Baltimore in exchange for second baseman Brian Roberts and young right-handed pitcher Hayden Penn.

Roberts would have filled the need for a second baseman and leadoff hitter, and Penn would have further stocked the club's stable of young pitching prospects.

But it's believed Orioles owner Peter Angelos squashed this deal because he doesn't want Roberts to be shipped out of Baltimore, where he's a popular community figure.

I know the Red Sox are one of them. Closer is probably the biggest need they have now that Drew and Lugo are signed.

I know he's stated he want to be the fulltime closer wherever he goes, but some of the teams interested in him insist on easing him back into the role. Also heard he's looking for $10 mill per, so that rules out some of the lesser thans. For a guy thats only pitched 16 games the last two years combined, thats a HUGE risk.

The talk here in Philly is that a deal is on the table that would send the Brewers Jon Lieber in exchange for Mench and Turbow, but the Phils won't pull the trigger because they are waiting to acquire another starter. They want Freddy Garcia from the White Sox and have to give up Aaron Rowand.

If I'm Gillick, I'm pulling the trigger on that Brewers deal anyway. STOP F'N AROUND, PAT!!!

Melvin, the Brewers General Manager, says Turnbow isn't available. He said it 2 days straight.

Melvin said teams had asked about Derrick Turnbow, who pitched his way out of the closer's role last season and has two years and $5.5 million left on his contract. "I'm not motivated to move him," Melvin said. . . .

My cousin is having a blast. He is a driver, and he picked up a 19 year old Braves radio announcer. Also the Athletic Trainer.

Anyway, I know the Braves are trying to sell high on LaRoche, mayube they don't think he can hit like he did last year, but that Giles/LaRoche for Roberts/Penn deal is atrocious. That would have been a HORRIBLE deal.
