I did say the market bared what it did, but in my opinion, it's way too much for a pitcher that had his best season five seasons ago.

He's in his prime, and he's a lefty. I hope I'm wrong, he might be able to turn it around.

I'm a Cubs fan, admittedly, and I didn't jump up and down on the Soriano bandwagon, either. I said earlier, he might be able to jack it out of the park, but for a leadoff hitter who k's alot and has a lousy on base percentage, he's not worth the $17 million, no matter what the market is bearing.

Same way I feel about Zito.

I agree with that, but the bottom line that is what they make! If you have decent year in the bigs you will make big money. It does suck, but you have to take the good with the bad. If they are going to over pay someone I will take my chance with Zito.

What a huge move by the Giants. I think Zito's numbers will improve dramatically since the bulk of his games will be in pitchers parks. I wouldn't be surprised if he's a 20 game winner with a 2.50-3.00 ERA

Isn't Oakland a pretty big pitchers park too?

Just think of all those outs that will now be foul balls into the seats.

Yeah but the entire NL West is a haven for pitchers. The only park that even remotely favours hitters is Arizona.

                And the AL West isn't?

Safeco, is even more of a pitchers park than Petco is. Anaheim isn't exactly a hitters park. Only hitters park in that division is Texas.

Also the NL have no DH, so it will average out to about the same if you think about it! Plus our park is a pitcher's park, so he will be fine. Also when Zito is on he is one of the best pitchers out there. So I hope for more on then off! But oh well you take the good with the bad!

I know Texas is a hitter parks. Don't know about Seatle and LA? Dodgers and SD pitchers parks.

                      To edit my previous post.

For hitters parks, Anaheim ranks 25th, just behind #24 McAfee.

Going to the NL West won't be any more of an improvement from a ballpark standpoint than the AL West was.

Sure Zito is young but it is not like he is going to get 5 miles per hour more on his fastball. He is the pitcher he is going to be. Not as dominate as Clemon's in his prime or as awful as Joel Piniero. The one thing I really dont like about the deal is the numbers of years. Seven years for any pitcher is too long of a deal.

Seattle, Oakland and Anaheim are all in the bottom third for hitters parks. Same as the NL West. Only Texas is consdiered a hitters park from a ball park factors standpoint.

Wow.. I don't even know what to think about this one. Can't decide whether to be mad that they're paying the guy 18 FRIGGIN million a year or mildly excited that they've finally signed someone bigger than a role player.. Either way we lost Schmidt and signed Zito.. wash. I just don't see the Giants turning it around after their 'veteran' plan failed horribly last year, what's the difference this year? I hope that I will be proved wrong
                            I do because I can, I can because I want, I want because you say I can't

Thanks for the info BK. I still think not having the DH will greatly help Zito out. It's funny how the former "big 3" all went to the NL.

I don't know what they are historically, but these are the numbers.

                                http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor

LA, Arizona, and Colorado were all hitters parks last year.
SD was the best pitcher's park.
SF was slightly in favor of pitchers, but was 2nd most "neutral" park last year.

edit: BK beat me to it.
