WHIP is huge. Look at a prime example in Jorge Sosa. Obviously he has no where near the ability of Zito, but he had horrible Whip numbers but ERA was low and got some wins. Braves move keep him as a starter, and the whip was the same, but this time those guys were scoring. He was atrocious.

Still, I think Zito has a Cy Young year this year, that's just my gut feeling.

With team like mine, bad WHIP = no wins.

Yea, if you play on a team that doesn't score any runs.

Doesn't make you less of a pitcher.

I'll take 18 to 20 wins a year over Whip! But also keep in mind that our park is a pitcher's park.

Zito not joining the Mets makes me happy as hell.

But the bottom line is win and loses. That is all that matters.

Indeed. We'll see how many he has with the Giants this oncoming season.

I think those that are stating that $18 million was overpay with him need to keep in mind that if this offseason is any indication of how the next few seasons will go... $18 million is the new $13 million.

                      For the team it is.

                      Not for the pitcher.

That is a good point. It appears the market just shifted upward by a pretty big margin, if this offseason is any indicator.

Well he was the most sought out Pitcher out there, so I am happy. With Cain, Lowry and Zito we will have a great pitching staff. Relief is a different story! lol..

I'm not going to make an argument that the pitcher with the most wins out of a select group is the most dominant, 'cause we all know that's not true, but rather that the Wins factor are indeed used to account for the pitcher's dominance.

Pedro would have been looked in much higher light had he been able to rack up the Wins against the Yankees...you see where I'm going with this?
my point is, a lower whip is a bigger indication of a pitcher's ability to win. Wins being tied to a pitcher's dominance is phony. Wins is a product of team performance. WHIP is a product of a pitcher's performance.
