There's a lot of talent out there the caliber of Sabathia and Teixeira?

Well he was the first guy to also break out the "*****" card as well. So I think we know what we're dealing with.

No one else could add 60 million to their payroll like that. No one else could add $423 million of longterm payroll like that.

Is that good for baseball? Is having a team with such a huge competitive advantage, good for the game?

But why do we need all these comments about baseball being ruined every single time the Yankees sign someone? If baseball is ruined because of the Yankees spending, then it's been ruined for years.

Besides Manny's issues i believe he is one of the best bats in baseball for the last ten years. Why isn't he an option? And truthfully i believe he's a better hitter then TEX and more clutch. His fielding is another story. TEX is more the overall package.

I agree with the $423 million but i believe there are teams that can add $50-60 million in one year to a team.

The difference between the Yankees and the other teams is, if those players don't work out they can absorb the salary. For everyone else, if they commit that kind of cash and it doesn't work out, it cripples the team for years.

The Yankees have a decided competitive advantage due to their market. Last year, for example no one was with in $60 million of their payroll.

If you think that's good in the longterm for the sport of baseball I don't know what to tell you.

It has indeed been ruined for years.

Again I don't place blame on the Yankees. They've got an advantage over every team in baseball and they use it. I'd do the same thing.

Here's 2008's payroll for the MLB

                        http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/salaries

Yankees above the top 5 by a good $70M and they spent another $400M this offseason. I dont know many teams that can not make the playoffs, ask for help on their new stadium and shell out $$ for 3 players while paying the top contract in the MLB

Mets being "cheap"?? Ok.. They grabbed a top line closer for sensible money, and addressed their biggest glaring need with some nice moves.. Plus, having heard that the owner lost a ton of money due to a huge financial scandal - probably hurts their position at the moment.

Being cheap would be the bottom feeding teams - the ones who cry poverty but whose owners care more about their own wealth than their fans

What people are probably going to argue is that the Yanks are spending like mad men with the world economy going in the tank. Others see that they are trying to justify the cost of some of the seats as a reason to spend money for talent.

As a met fan, I'm glad he didn't go to another national league team, and could care less about the signings.

What can baseball do at this point though? Tell the Yanks they can't pay their players anymore? They let it get to far out of hand.

Maybe I'm to young to remember, but was there ever salary cap talk in baseball? I would think at one point there was.

Also, I just heard that Lowe may be on the way. There's a lot of things I can call the Wilpons but cheap isn't one of them. Because Lowe is gonna require serious change, he is a Boras client.

Maybe in 1994, but I honestly can't remember. I was done with baseball at that point until fantasy baseball brought me back in. The Yankees spending this much dough is ridiculous but they have the means and it isn't against the rules. Makes me hate them more though.

This book was a great read. Wish MLB would implement some of his ideas.
