Re: Griffey near return to Mariners

yes i agree the griffey/diaz platoon would work out quite nicely i think...that way griffey doesnt have to play everyday and have a better chance of staying healthy. i just think kelly is too good of a hitter especially when he is on, to be hitting eigth..its going to be interesting to see what cox does with the lineup...it would all be so simple if we could count on francoeur to hit .300 with 20-30 hrs but until he shows improvement im not counting on it. but i think they almost have to move chipper to cleanup since mccann is out every fifth day. what do you think of this:

    anderson
    escobar
    johnson
    chipper
    mccann
    griffey/diaz
    kotchman
    francoeur

and the bottom three could always be changed around depending on the whether it's lefty or righty..and if frenchy gets it together he can surely move up the 5 hole

      My line-up

      RP------------ LP-
      Anderson----- Escobar
      Escobar ------Anderson
      Chipper -------Chipper
      McCann -------McCann
      Griffey --------Francouer
      Francoeur -----Johnson
      Kohnson -------Diaz
      Kotchman -----Kotchman
      P --------------P

I dont mind Francouer hittin so high up as long as he proves his self in the spring..With Kotchman hes not much of a power threat; more of a contact/doubles kind of guy so in the 8 hole he could drive in some runs with kelly and Diaz/Francouer in front...

As far as Griffey Jr becoming a Brave is concerned im not sure it's a good fit simply because he is a left handed hitter. The Braves need a right handed power bat to place in the cleanup spot between Chipper and B'mac. A left handed bat really isn't going to help as Chipper is always going to bat 3rd in the lineup no matter what and McCann is a prototypical 5 spot hitter as he doesn't hit enough homers or drive in enough runs to be a cleanup hitter. That only leaves Francoeur and Griffey Jr for the cleanup spot and neither one of those guys should bat any higher than 6th.

with the options left in the market i dont believe they are looking for someone to hit cleanup..there isnt anyone out there that can do it. they are simply looking for someone platoon with diaz who hits lefties...meaning the other platoon man needs to hit righties, which would be a left handed bat. so most likely mccann will hit cleanup when he is in the lineup which is where he hit last season after teixeira was traded. which means chipper in the 3 hole. unless someone has a good spring its gonna be chipper and mccann in the 3 and 4 spot. the only other option i see is moving chipper to the cleanup spot and have someone else hit in the three hole which in my opinion kelly johnson could do

I am a diehard braves fan and have always wanted to see griffey play for the braves. But now, in his career, I don't think it would be very beneficial to him if he plays for the braves. To me, he needs to go to the AL teams because he is getting to the point where he can primarily just be the DH. He would be an excellent DH hitter but he has just lost a lot of his speed and mobility to play in the field. And I really don't understand why they would sign Griffey to a one or two year deal and NOT give John Smoltz a one or two year deal. Both players are getting close to retirement but one has been a Brave all his life. I figured something like this would happen when that new ownership took over.

i'm not sure anyone knows what griff has left in the tank. you put a healthy griff in ATL and you might be surprised at what you get. personally, if i have KGJ on my team, he doesn't platoon -- forget that. bring him in, bring some fans in, give him a chance and go with it....

You'd be looking for a new job by the All-Star break. Junior is horrid against lefties anymore. His line against them over the last three years.

Yeah, he's just a shell of the player he used to be. Its hard to believe he can't even sniff lefties anymore because he used to pound the hell out of them. Its still hard for me to believe The Kid is 39 and that it was 20 years ago he made his debut.

From the looks of things he'll announce he's signing with Atlanta tomorrow. I seriously question Frank Wren's mental sanity since he's wanting Junior to play Left and Center.

If he goes to Atlanta, I hope it means Zduriencik will make a bigger effort for Swisher or Johnson.

yes yes yes! one of my favorites of all time. i'm sure that clouds my judgement a little... you know, hoping a little of the old griffey returns... but for sentimental reasons i'm pumped!

as diehard a braves fan as i am it just wasn't worth the risk in resigning smoltz...just too many question marks..plus he wouldnt be ready for several months. i think they learned their lesson from last season trying to depend on older arms in the rotation. even though it looks like glavine is coming back, atleast we can pencil him in to begin the season and their are less question marks that surrounnd him.
the only reason we are trying to sign griffey is what else is out there? much better than giving up prospects for swisher or nady. we let abreu slip away, and dunn was just too expensive so griffey is the next best option in my opinion. and with diaz making over a million this year and they way he hit's lefties, he has got to get in the lineup somehow and platooning him with someone is the only way...he's not an everyday player

Griffey has chosen the Braves over the M's, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Going to be awesome and surreal to see Jr. finally in a Braves uni.

I think he's going to be one of the biggest surpries and bargains of this offseason...I think he'll be determined to prove he still has something left.

                              I'm lovin' this.

I'm indifferent towards the signing and doubtful he'll do anything worthwhile, however the kid in me hopes Junior exceeds expectations and goes out with a bang for ATL.

Now for some humor I'm tuning into KJRAM's online feed to listen to the meathead Mariner fans call for Jack Zduriencik's head for not signing the Franchise Savior to return us to glory.
