ORLY, Joe? Teams that win their divisions (and make the playoffs) can reach the World Series? Let's take a look back to see if you're right.

2009 NY Yankees: 1st in the AL East, made the playoffs, won the World Series.
2008 Phillies: 1st in the NL East, made the playoffs, won the World Series.
2007 Boston Red Sox: 1st in the AL East, made the playoffs, won the World Series. (did not have a weakness BTW).
2007 Cleveland Indians: 1st in the AL Central, made the playoffs, did not make the World Series, but could have had they not lost in the ALCS. Had too many weaknesses.
2006 SF Giants: 3rd in the NL West, did not make the playoffs, did not make the World Series.
2005 Washington Nationals: 5th in the NL East, did not make the playoffs, did not make the World Series.

Nevermind the fact that you didn't even answer the 2nd part of his question (and answered the 1st part of his question by restating the question), I did learn today that the Braves can make the World Series if they make the playoffs.

    BTW, consistency count: 1.
Paul asks an interesting question, aside for some redundancy (Red Soxs?)

    Joe Morgan (11:23 AM)

Which is something unique and unique only to the 2010 Boston Red Sox.

???????? Boston is going to have to "move forward", but they also need the teams ahead of them to lose games. It's a zero-sum game.

The only way a team can gain ground in the standings is if:

    A. They win.
    B. The other team loses.

The same problems facing the Atlanta Braves also face the Boston Red Sox. Amazing.

    Consistency count: 2.

Tito asks quite the whopper later in the JoeChat, but back to Joe.

Inconsistency, something only applicable to Jeff Francoeur. It's not as if the fact that baseball seasons are 162 games long has anything to do with it.

Does inconsistency count in the "consistency" category? Why the **** not: 3.

Yeah, just like that one gu.....no, I can't think of any off the top of my head.

One of these sentences is not like the other and has absolutely no relevance to the question.

It's like one of those SAT questions where you have to point out the irrelevant sentence/replace it with something that isn't as ridiculous. (Hint: It has to do with Jim Edmonds).

    I don't know, because it's only been 4 games since A-Rod hit #599?

Surely, Joe will hit cleanup on this one.

You know what the problem is? A-Rod just hasn't been CONSISTENT!!!!1111

If you took a cursory glance at A-Rod's game logs, you'll find that he had a 7 game gap between HRs number 597 and 598.

Why did I pick those two numbers? No idea. It's the same reason why arbitrary emphasis is put on milestone stats.

Tito decides to ask a trick question and asks how much of a catalyst Juan Pierre and his 64 OPS+ has been for opposing pitching staffs this year.

Joe is too stupid to realize this and points out that he is a fan of player who in many ways is the antithesis of Joe Morgan the player (.392 career OBP vs. .344 career OBP and 132 OPS+ vs. 84 OPS+ for Morgan and Pierre respectively).

    4.

No, both of you just need to learn the concept of representative heuristics.

    Law of large numbers.

Over the course of a 162 game season, there are bound to be some troughs.

Joe actually understands some of that concept, but you can't forget about consistency!!!!

    That puts us at 5.

And this is where I hand the baton back to the FJM bloggers (who come back for a day on September, I think).

      2. He's not someone I could immediately list off the top of my head. Neither could Joe Morgan for that matter, so it's irrelevant to bring it up.

You're right...I had forgotten they don't recognize it anymore. I just remember watching it when it happened and just being amazed that someone could lose a no-no.

Olson-for-heisman I almost want to say why bother analyzing Morgan's chats? I've read a few in my time and he's got to be one of the most vaguest and frustrating people to read because he often says things that are either common sense or flipping questions around to make himself sound better.

Asking him for information is like asking a 5 year old what he likes about his favorite things. He'll tell you EVERYTHING except get to the heart of the matter and often times you're left wanting more.

With respect, you missed the entire point of that post.

This thread is supposed to be OS's version of FJM.

Dylan Hernandez, LA Times Dodgers' beat writer:
Baseball insider recently said James Loney was "hands down" the Dodgers' MVP in the first half of the season.
List of players with a higher WAR (according to fangraphs) than Loney and his paltry .770 OPS:

                        Furcal
                        Kershaw
                        Kuroda
                        Billingsly
                        Martin
                        Broxton
                        Ramirez
                        Kuo
                        Blake
                        Ely
I'm sure Ronnie Belliard could post a similar WAR if he played 1B (does this count as an entry?)

I'll take a wild guess and say this baseball insider is Ned Colletti.

If injuries hadn't derailed Andre Either's season in may we might be talking about him for NL MVP let alone team MVP. Loney is greatly over valued by the Dodgers.

Two Mets' announcers talking about BABIP:
Gary: Can I say something about sabermetrics?
                              Ron: Yes.
Gary: Because we don’t talk about sabermetrics very often. And you know I think there are certain metrics that have come into play that are useful. But I think sometimes the people that are adherent to sabermetrics overrate the importance of them. In David Wright’s case, David has struck out a ton this year. Struck out 91 times. And yet he’s hitting well over .300. Now, one of the stats that the sabermetrics people like to throw at you is batting average on balls in play. And if you have a particularly high batting average on balls in play, they like to think that it’s because you’re lucky. In other words, if you have a high batting average on balls in play, it shouldn’t be that high, which means you’re having a fortunate year and you’ll come back down again.
                              [Game action narration]
Gary: Conversely, if a pitcher has a particularly low batting average on balls in play, they like to tell you it’s going to rise eventually. Well, to me that doesn’t make any sense. Certain guys hit the ball harder than other guys hit it. Certain pitchers induce more groundballs or more weakly hit balls than others. That’s part of what you’re trying to do. Am I totally off base with that?
Ron: No I totally agree with you, I think that for the average hitter, to have a high average putting balls in play, it’s probably because they do have some lucky hits. But certain hitters, like Wright, hit the ball hard almost all the time.
Way to knock down those easy strawmen, Mets' crew. Not one respectable sabermetrician believes that high BABIP = lucky (for hitters anyway).

Hitters do have some control over BABIP since they control how hard they hit the ball, as Ron Darling pointed out, but this isn't some kind of gotcha point. We have xBABIP for a reason.

I like how Bunning only further perpetuates the stereotype that politicians (both left and right) are completely oblivious and ignorant to the facts of any given situation. If he took five minutes to do some research he would know that Strasburg WANTED to pitch but that Riggleman, Rizzo and the trainers decided to play it safe. Then again, I wouldn't expect much more from somebody who was named one of America's Five Worst Senators in 2006 by TIME Magazine. Not to mention that during his 2004 Senate campaign he said that his opponent of Italian descent looked "like one of Saddam Hussein's sons".
