Whaddya guys think of Art Howe? I mean the man re-built the A's...but he's not exactly an ***-kicker. Overpaid, underacheiving veterans need an ***-kicker. I think when the mets go young, Art Howe will be fine. But AS OF RIGHT NOW, I think y'all would have been better of with lou piniella.

Re: NY Mets Thread
I think they can make Art Howe very useful in the near future. It's true he is much better with young players, and that what the Mets will be in a couple years. This team right now will not last. Vaughn, Alomar, Burnitz and Sanchez will all be gone and maybe even Piazza. In their place will be Reyes, Heilman and Strange, and these are the people who Howe can and will help the most. So if the Mets clean house and bring up the prospects Howe may become a very important part of the team.Comment

Re: NY Mets Thread
If I were the Mets I'd look to trade Piazza, it's only going to get worse for him in the NL. I'm sure there's an AL team or two that he could absolutely solidify as a DH. Alomar too, would benefit from a return to the AL.
Firing Phillips' makes no difference to me. The philosophy of the team needs to change. The Mets owned NY in the late 80s because they had a minor league system that produced exciting, albeit volatile talent. The way for them to reassert themselves is from within, not by playing a 'who can spend the most money war with the Yanks'-- the Mets just don't have the base of homegrown talent (i.e. Jeter, Bernie, Posada..etc) to add upon anymore. Over-spending on the market killed the team in the early 90s and it's killed the team again 10 years later. It's time to rebuild. I'd rather root for a young and crappy team that tries hard then an old and crappy team that doesn't try hard each and every time.Comment

True enough, that's what made rooting for the Twins easier during their horrid 8 year run...

Re: NY Mets Thread
that rey sanchez fiasco makes it even worse...word around ny is that howe didn't even manage the a's and oakland gm billy beane called all the shots and that's why they let him go. they coulld've easily lured pinella to manage here. why would he want to go to tampa bay of all teams (even though he wanted to go close to home)?Comment

Re: NY Mets Thread
I'm not giving up on this season yet. Now, if they go through the West teams decently and take 4 out of 6 from Atlanta and Philly each in this month, then we will be right back in it. The Mets need to try to get to around .500 by the end of the month. Take it a week at a time and they will be back in it. Hell Mo Vaughn on the DL might be a blessing in disguise.Comment

Re: NY Mets Thread
Dude, I respect your optimism, but this team needs to go on a 10 game losing streak and start to clean house. It's a terrible team. A TERRIBLE team. We've got a lot of talent, and we'll win a few games here and there, but it just kills me to watch these guys play. At this point my biggest fear is for the Mets to stay in contention then I pick up the paper and read we've traded Aaron Heilman to the Dodgers for Andy Ashby, or some other rising talent for more washed up veterans who saw there best years a millenium ago. It needs to stop. This team needs to end, then we'll see what rises from the ashes.Comment
