they need to do the big R. that's rebuild. no one's going to take vaugh without the mets paying practically all of his salary. there's also a rumor that he might retire because of his injury, but i don't think he will given his huge contract and the fact that he couldn't possibly get any worse. they could get value for alomar and get something for benitez once he proves he can get out of his closing slump. if anything, reyes should be called up towards the end of the season. there's no rush for him to be called up untill the mets can prove they're somewhat contending and he can make a difference next year.

another big situation is that the ny media is pressuring piazza to play 1st base. that's also a problem if the mets rebuild. he's too old, can't throw a guy to save his life, and he won't play 1st base or DH. therefore, no team wants to give up alot for him as he's making 15 mil. a big big mess if you ask me....

ah, but Vaughn's contract is covered 75% by insurance if he is injured and can't play anymore...we can only hope. They can and should trade alomar for prospects. I think Piazza is finally moving towards moving to 1st base with all the recent injuries he is getting frustrated. How is this potential lineup for late 2003

    Reyes - SS
    Perez - CF
    Floyd - LF
    Piazza - 1B
    Clark - RF
    Wigginton -3B
    Wilson - C
    Sanchez - 2B

I would love to see that lineup. You have Mcewing and Bell too to help the Middle infield and who know who you can get for alomar.

On a sidenote, Middlebrook and Strange look like they are doing quite well down in Norfolk. Anyone know when these guys are scheduled to come up (approx.)

Well, Jason Middlebrook is 28 so he's scheduled to come up in 1998 Pat Strange and Aaron Heilman are sporting ERAs under 3 as we speak, so I'm sure as soon as Astacio gets hurt we'll see one of them. Bacsik is doing terrible down there.

In related news, I'm perfectly cool with the Mets finally dealing Leiter to the Mariners to give Seattle the starting pitcher/ bulldog they need for the postseason. The M's have a wealth of talent to trade with. Maybe they'll decide they really want to win the World Series this year and actually trade for someone other than Jose Offerman down the stretch.

As for our other prospects-- Reyes is batting .258 with 11 walks in 100 at-bats so I doubt we'll be seeing him in our line-up anytime soon. He does have 19 Sbs however.

In AA, Craig Brazell continues to hit well. At St. Lucie, my favorite Met's prospect, 3B David Wright is batting .313 with 5hr and 27rbis... and is among league leaders. Justin Huber is batting .286. at Capitol City, last year's #1 pick Scott Kazmir appears to be pitching in long relief, and in 13 innings he has 22 K's.

reyes is projected to be a leadoff guy, yes. I think it will benefit him greatly if they can bat him 7th when he comes up though, keep the pressure off.

I just hope they bring along the pitchers one at time and don't try to hype them up like they did with Wilson/Pulsipher/Isringhausen, boy did that backfire. Lets be patient with our young talent.

And one last word in defense of Phillips, we do have alot of young talent. As I said before, I can thing of only one player whe have traded away during his tenure that I wish we hadn't and that is Dotel. He has kept the prospects here and I think it will pay dividends for us in the near future. I know he will get fired before this year is out, but he is just a scapegoat to keep the NY press and fans satisfied that ownership is trying to improve the team.

No, Benitez won't be fine. If by miracle the Mets manage to stay in the thick of things you can be sure Benitez will be there to blow the big games. This is the norm for him. Right now he just happens to be blowing normal games. Usually he eats the weaker teams alive and thus his stats wind up looking good, but he's a consumate failure in the clutch.

Since the Mets are a bad team and a good closer for a bad team is a luxury, there's no reason for the Mets not to trade him. A combination of Strickland and Stanton can serve as closer for the one or two games a week the Mets are in a position to win. But lets see what we can get for Benitez. Maybe we can steal the next Octavio Dotel from someone else.

didn't we trade dotel for hampton? if my memory serves me correctly, then at that time it was a good move. As for benitez. we need to prove that he can still close, then trade him. he's getting old, and as we've seen with mariano rivera, closers don't last that long. besides, we're not going to need him if we're loosing, and it's a good chance he's not comming back after his contract runs out.

as for leiter, i'd like to keep him. unless they can get a good prospect, they're better off keeping him around. he's a great clubhouse guy, and he'll be a good mentor to some of the young pitchers. they need to keep guys like him and get rid of the sanchezs and benitezs.

i thought baksic was good. he had a good start or 2 last season
