Dude, I respect your optimism, but this team needs to go on a 10 game losing streak and start to clean house. It's a terrible team. A TERRIBLE team. We've got a lot of talent, and we'll win a few games here and there, but it just kills me to watch these guys play. At this point my biggest fear is for the Mets to stay in contention then I pick up the paper and read we've traded Aaron Heilman to the Dodgers for Andy Ashby, or some other rising talent for more washed up veterans who saw there best years a millenium ago. It needs to stop. This team needs to end, then we'll see what rises from the ashes.

      Re: NY Mets Thread

The key is the bats, if they get going, and they can, this team is still a solid team. Their starting rotation is aging, but still quality and their pen will be good when they don't have to be lights out every day just to give the team a chance. The key to this whole team is offensive consistency. It looked like they were getting it when Alomar moved to leadoff, but the engine just never turned over. Believe it or not, they need Burnitz back. He was hitting .280 + which is 60 pts higher than last season. If he can keep hitting like that (he was swinging at alot fewer pitches) and Floyd kicks in, than they might get something going. Oh yeah, they gotta stop playing defense like the bad news freakin bears!

As for Howe, his signature is not on this team yet and that is a problem. The Rey Sanchez situation needs to be handled swiftly. This is a veteran team and they know what to do with guys who don't contribute 100%, the kangaroo court needs to be in session now. Where is Keith Hernandez when you need him?

There is not much Phillips can do for this team right now. Replacing him would not make any immediate difference either. I think that the decision on Phillips will be entirely based on how much responsibility he is taking behind closed doors and what his vision is for the future. If ownership is not happy with his plan for things to improve in the future, they will look elsewhere. There is so much money invested in this team right now that they have to treat this as a go for it year, but there are no missing parts to go out and get right now so Phillips and co. need to be focused on the potential rebuilding process they face in '04-'06.

Personally I don't think Phillips deserves to get canned. He has brought alot of talent in to the Mets organization and other than Octavio Dotel, I can't think of anyone he has traded away that the Mets should have kept. They have 5 of the top 100 prospects in the Minors right now and that bodes well for the potential rebuilding. If ownership and Phillips agree that the Mets are headed down that path, they he'll stay I think. If not, well, they will get someone who agrees with them on rebuilding or not rebuilding....and I'll stop rambling now.

dude, they got Piazza for Wilson. Perhaps you would rather have Todd Pratt or Todd Hundley catching? Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot about Vance Wilson, Jason Phillips and Aberto Castillo. No, I think getting Piazza was a slightly good move.

has he ever recovered from that injury he suffered 2 weeks after we traded him? I don't see the Mets trading any of their prospects. I think we should let this team play, if they win they win, if they lose, they lose.

I agree, there is no trade they can make to improve the team. IF they find themselves out of it totally, then they could trade some big contracts for prospects, but the way to big money guys are playing, no one will take them. I think Escobar is playing in the minors, but I think he is still hampered by the injury.

The mets would have to kick some serious tail over the next month for them to keep Steve P. Personally, i think that, while its not his fault that players are playing badly, some of his moves have been crazy (Relaford and Shinjo for Estes comes to mind)

This upcoming week should produce 4-6 wins (I mean its SD and LA) Next week, in Col and SF, i would be happy with 4 wins out of 7 games, and the end of the month is brutal, 11 games vs Atl and Phi, and they have to do serious damage then, and i mean 8 of 11, seriously, because if not, Steve might as well kiss his job, and his a$$ goodbye.

Do i think the Mets can do it, Hell Yeah!!

Do i think it will happen.....Probably Not - And this is the way Steve P probably feels too.

On a side note: I feel so sorry for J. Seo, i mean, the Kid is pitching great, going 6+ inns, and giving it his all and the Mets spaghetti defense and snoozing bats aint helping him one bit. Its kinda like back in the 80's, when Doc Gooden would pitch lights out, and either get a no decision or a loss, because the Mets gave him no Run Support. Seo is 1-2, and should easily be 3-1. Hes got 3BB in 34.1 inns, w/20K's, ill take that over D. Cone any day

a lot of good points have been made here, and as frustrating and infuriating as this current crop of Mets is, ill be a fan no matter what

now, having said that, exactly WHAT is the delay in bringing up Reyes? he doesnt need to be a savior, no one player can save this team, but an infusion of life, zeal, spirit etc is sorely needed around here

one more thing, being a Rangers (hockey) fan, i endured the Neil Smith "snap up everybodys old broken down underperforming players in hopes of a career resurrection in NY" mantra, which apparently Phillips prescribes to as well....personally, the idea of letting him hang around long enough to see another trade deadline and try to pull off yet another move to save face....well, that just frightens the hell outta me....however, if the Wilpons mandate that he not dump any young talent, then im all for letting him finish the season as GM and they can hire someone new in the offseason ( or is THIS the offseason? LOL)
