Re: Waiver claim placed on Alex Rios

You guys act as if Rios is a complete useless asset. The guy still is just 28 and in his badness is a 20-20 player. I've seen far worse contracts for guys of less and diminishing talent. Sure this may be a good move if Toronto has something to back it up (ie: re-sign Halladay).. but I really see no reason Halladay would even want to comeback to that mess.

If the Giants didn't have some crazy contract like Zito's already, I would've been more than welcome to add him.

Yeah, I don't get the way people are trashing him here. Is he the greatest player ever? No. But he's not awful or anything. It's not like there's a giant crop of RF'ers who are better than him. He gives solid production for his position.

His contract isn't even that bad. The years suck, but I mean 60 million dollars? That's not that much. It's a fair contract given his production and the market. It's not like he's locked up and owed 130 million dollars over the next however many years or something. There's plenty of far worse contracts in baseball.

I see nothing wrong with taking a chance on him.

His averages have plummeted the last couple years. He's gone from a .297/.354/.498 line to a .264/.317/.427 line. His OPS+ is below average right now, sitting at 94. He ranks 22nd among RFers this year with 1.1 WAR.

So yes, he is borderline awful and there is a giant crop of right fielders who are better. The White Sox are idiots for picking up his contract.

Ugh, I wanted the Tigers to get him. He would have looked good in the gaping hole that is LF.

But even worse, a division rival claims him.

Hell, I'd even take Vernon Wells in LF now, at least he has some power and can play solid D.

You're kidding right? Wells has been the worst player in the entire sport this year.

Don't worry too much Rios will make a costly base running or fielding error at the most important time. I can't wait to see Sox fans cuss Rios out.

and to think the Jays expressed interest in him a couple years back.

Lolz. Bad week for Kenny Williams.

Chicago White Sox general manager Kenny Williams has been given a ticket for jaywalking by the Seattle Police Department.
Williams was cited Monday outside Safeco Field for illegally crossing a street away from a crosswalk. The GM was on his cell phone after exiting a cab and was on his way into the stadium hours before his team's game against the Mariners when a traffic-control officer nabbed him and wrote a $56 ticket.
Williams had just completed a waiver claim that brought All-Star outfielder Alex Rios -- and $61.6 million of his contract -- to Chicago.
Williams tried to tell the officer people in Chicago cross streets anywhere. He said the officer told him, not in Seattle.

Correct, Giles and Betancourt easily have Wells beaten in the worst regular category.

I'm still disappointed, but this could turn out not be a total black hole of a move. I have zero faith in Ricciardi making the moves in the offseason with the money, though. Hopefully giving away decent players and paying others not to play for you is enough reason for Beeston/probably Kasten to finally give the clown the boot.

The Jays did get something back for Wells; they got money back that they can use on the real talent of the team: Roy Halladay.

Wells wasn't going to help that team be competitive. Halladay can. All along, the Jays have talked about not having the money to keep Halladay. Well, now they have $12 MM to throw at him.

Ah, we could have at least gotten something for him. The Sox were offering us Josh Fields!

Ah well, at least we have some more money to spend on Halladay and hopefully call up Travis Snider, who has been on fire in AAA.

I do like Alex Rios and think he'll play better after a change of scenery, but not for what he is making. The Tigers need to dump large contracts, not look to take more of them in. This team already has too much money tied to underperforming and underachieving players.

True that. Willis, Bonderman, and Robertson are all painful. Plus, we have a bunch of geezers who are now at the overpaid part of their contract.
But still, we needed another bat, and Rios is better than the bums we've been rotating around that position.
