If you're gonna be a total idiot, at least try to do so quietly and in private. Broadcast it and become a self-proclaimed pundit? Then, it serves you right when putting your foot in your mouth constantly leaves a bitter taste.

I would put in Bonds, Clemens, A-Rod, Pete Rose, and Shoeless Joe...and maybe Fernando Tatis Sr. and others...before Schilling.

In that case, the Hall of Fame means jack ****.

I'm in the US and just said I was surprised how many games he played with the Angels

I don't know if this is an east/west bias in the states, or a north/south bias against the states, but you just blew my mind lol

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

California has more exposure for audiences than Montreal does. Not saying they're biased, but no doubt he was on those national televised games alot more as an Angel than Expo. Same as if you see a guy go from Milwaukee to NY or Tampa to Boston.

Shame for a guy like Larry Walker, not getting as recognized as he should in voting. Voters both not as knowledgeable about his time in Montreal and underrate his time in Colorado (where his ops+ is still impressive, showing it wasn't just a Coors effect)

They don't. Players can express a preference, but the Hall decides. About a decade back, Wade Boggs wanted to go in with a Devil Ray cap (supposedly this was a clause in his 1998 contract with Tampa Bay), and MLB stepped in. Gary Carter and Andre Dawson wanted to go in as a Met and Cub, respectively (partly because they'd get a lot more dough for memorabilia signings, etc.), but were overruled.

Didn't MLB step in because there was bidding involved? I might be mis-remembering, but I could have sworn Boggs was letting teams bid or something like that.

5 years, man! I always immediately think of him getting a hit from a pitch that bounced in the dirt. It just amazed me he had that type of concentration.

It was one of those “doh! that’s right” moments when I saw Vlad and Angels. I’ve just always thought of him with the Expos.

Now, I REALLY don’t remember him on the O’s.

I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but of the guys on the 2019 ballot, who do people think gets in?

Edgar has to get in. 70% this year, and next year is his final year. People can criticize the DH position all they want, but don't tell me that Ortiz won't get in the HOF when he's eligible, even though he spent more percentage of his time as a DH than Edgar.

In terms of first timers, Halladay and Rivera I think will get in next year.

Everyone was bitching about Jones maybe falling off, but it's pretty ridiculous that Johan Santana only got 2.4%

If it's a morality vote, virtually nobody gets in. His baseball violations aside, Rose is a convicted tax cheat and accused pedophile. (The only thing Rose disputes is whether the girl was 16 or not.) Schilling says a lot of stupid things (IMO) and should be called out for doing so. But I'll take someone who's an idiot in public over someone who chases jailbait in private.
Fair points. I think the "virtually nobody gets in" part is a pretty specious generalization though. No interest in arbitrating these guys' private lives en masse, but Schilling being such a blockhead as a willingly public figure (and clearly reveling in it) is simply too much for me. I agree with the sentiment that it should be about what they did on the field, but I also feel having a "character clause" is not a terrible thing either.

It already doesn't mean anything. Except to those that get in and those that want to. None of this affects the price of tea in China so to speak.
