What he did was wrong but if you want me to believe that he had every intention of kicking Jason LaRue in the head and injuring him, I think you're nuts. Kicking in general, I get.
I can sit here and tell you with 100% iron clad certainty that I would be just as disgusted with this act had the roles been reversed and it was a Cardinal that was kicking players. You simply do not do that.

As for not kicking to injure, let me ask you this...why else does a person kick or punch in that situation? Self defense will probably be the answer, but then ask yourself, what is self defense? Self defense is defending your self from harm by inflicting harm.

This is a good post. I can agree with it. Was Cueto punished enough though? 7 games is more than most have gotten lately for anything outside of violating the drug policy.
IMO, and this has nothing to do with Cueto, pitchers aren't disciplined in a manner that is fair to other players. Cueto received 7 games for his actions, while Nyjer Morgan received 8 games for his. Now which penalty is more severe, a starting pitcher missing 7 games(what is that 2 starts at most?) vs an everday player missing 8 games.

Starting pitchers need to be disciplined in a manner where there suspensions equal the same amount of missed games as others.

I will say that if I thought that his actions were 100% malicious, which I don't, in my mind I wouldn't defend him. You bring up a good point about suspensions. Starting pitchers, when they are suspended, should probably be suspended for an equal number of starts that a position player would get. I guess that would have put Cueto out until September had they done it that way.

The Cardinals are the Cubs biggest rivals. The Reds are barely in our top 5. And before you ask:

          1. Cardinals
          2. White Sox
          3. Brewers
          4. Astros
          5. Reds
          IMO

Why would the Cubs be biased towards the Cardinals, ever?
I'm not saying Cubs are biased towards Cards. I'm saying Cubs biased towards Cubs. Again, I don't give a crap whatsoever that the Reds aren't a rival of the Cubs or the Cards. When I was in St. Louis on Labor Day weekend for the Reds-Cards series, from talking with the many Cards fans that I did, they can live with the Reds winning the division just as long as it isn't the Cubs. They hate Chicago.

As far as the rest of what you said, it's not entirely accurate. I've never said that just because I gave this a little more though that means what I'm saying is more true. All I've done is try to put myself in multiple people's shoes when thinking about it. Try to gain another perspective? Folks aren't doing that other than countryboy. The easier thing to do, which has been shown by many in here, is to just see it as it is on the surface and bash the hell out of Cueto. That's fine. Thinking about it beyond that, whether I want to believe it or not, I guess, is pretty much irrelevant. I guess I just don't want Cueto to be made out as the villain that most seem to see him as without trying to look at things from his perspective. That's all.

          Yeah, exactly.

Last post in the thread. *In before the "good riddance" posts!* Here's what we know:
          - There was a brawl between the Reds and Cards
          - Johnny Cueto made contact with Jason LaRue's head due to kicking his leg at people
          - LaRue has had 19 previous concussions over the previous 20 years or so
          - LaRue was forced to retire after getting kicked in the head due to his suffering of a 20th concussion
          - Kicking people in a brawl is pretty lame and should have never happened
          - Baseball brawls in general, Chris Carpenter, are classless. It's not just the kicking of people.
          - Carpenter and Cueto are both female dogs

Here's what we don't know, despite some that presume to know:
          - What was going through Cueto's mind at the time? Did he deliberately kick LaRue in the head? Was he aiming, etc.? Regardless of intent, he had to be punished
          - Would Cueto's kick to the head caused a concussion for anyone other than Jason LaRue who had an average of one concussion per year for the previous 20 years? I mean, maybe his brain was traumatized enough to where he might have gotten a concussion hitting his head on the cabinet door while getting a bowl for his Corn Flakes. We don't know that. Doesn't make what Cueto did any less wrong, which pretty much makes this thought irrelevant.

This is the most I've gotten involved in a testy discussion, especially where I was on the minority side, since I joined OS over 6 years ago. I've honestly tried to avoid these situations because I'm not a real big fan of them. country and I have already exchanged pm's but I'll say, elTodd, mKoz, and whoever else, I have no beef with any of you. It's just been a healthy discussion. What Cueto did was wrong and someone suffered because of it. I don't think he kicked LaRue in the head on purpose and don't think he should be banned for life. Call me biased, call me ridiculous, because of that. I don't care. Right or wrong, the only thing I do know is that Cueto will be pitching in the playoffs in a couple of weeks and is going to have many more people than he imagined rooting for him to fail. I won't be one of them.

Okay....didn't think I'd really have to spell it out.
            But...
Some guys are saying..."hey, he only grazed him"...."that didn't end his career".

Hello....is the point being that I only grazed him ....or shot at him?(I'm trying to correlate that the point wasn't the end result of the action...but the action itself...HE KICKED HIM IN THE HEAD PEOPLE!...he didn't MEAN to "graze" him).

Why did he do that?....some people were saying that Carp "shouldn't have opened his mouth. Oh...okay....that makes sense...I say something to you ....you try and kick me in the head. Makes perfect sense now. What was I thinking?

Now...should he be thrown out of baseball?....of course not. That's a little ridiculous....but to defend his actions?...equally ridiculous IMO.

Slim, if you think I (and others) didn't put myself in Cueto's shoes, you're wrong. If I was in that situation, I'm playing peacekeeper, not aggressive "self defender".

If a hockey player did the same thing, would you be defending him? In the heat of the moment, he may forget he had skates on by your logic, right?

I know I said last post but I need to mention this. Reading your post made me realize something that never occurred to me until now, which I deserve a giant facepalm for...I forgot they wear metal spikes in MLB. This isn't D-league softball, Slim, where rubber spikes are worn. Grant it, shouldn't make a difference as far as the shoes had spikes on them period and nobody should kick at people while wearing them. But now I feel a whole lot worse. Uh, to answer your question, ice skates cut just slightly better than metal spikes, but they're both very dangerous. How did that sound? Oh man...gonna be a while until I can build up trust, credibility, you name it, again.
