Re: Red Sox agree to terms with Carl Crawford
Living in Virginia when they won it all (and having to catch most of my games at Camden-i.e Fenway lite) and now living in Texas (and having to catch most of my games at Arlington), it's embarrassing sometimes.
This past August I got to sweat in 110 degree heat and listen to a group of "Red Sox fans" lecture the Rangers fans on what it's like to root for a champion (during a game that we lost, in a series we lost, to the team that actually made the playoffs). The rest of us Red Sox fans were too busy being hot and pissed off to tell the Rangers fans how to be fans.
Those of us who have been fans for more than just the last 6 years, can still remember how much it sucked to underachieve year after year (and with far more resources wasted than the Rangers have period).
Anyway, it's true...we've got quite a big bandwagon. Real Red Sox fans aren't obnoxious because the Sox finally won. We're obnoxious because we're Mass-holes and have a little brother complex with NY...lol.
BTW, none of this is meant to imply you don't know what it is to be a fan by any means...only saying he has a point about bandwagoners since we finally won it all.Comment

He's got a point. True, we've always had a good and large fanbase, but the "pink hat" crowd (you know, all the people who become fans because it's trendy and buy the wrong colored hat/gear) has grown to ridiculous proportions since they actually won it all in 04 and unreal since 07.

Re: Red Sox agree to terms with Carl Crawford
As a Red Sox fan for over 30 years now, I am definately going to say I dislike a majority of the people that go into Fenway nowadays.
I fully understand that is extremely shallow of me. However, I fully stand by it. I have to think any Red Soxfan that has gone into a home game since 2002ish can somewhat agree with me. They don't ruin the expieriece for me personally, its just all the annoying girls that know nothing about baseball, the "suits", and the local college kids, are all flat out annoying, and spend a majority of the time NOT watching the game, unless "Papi" gets up.
I also understand that in part its because of these people, ownership can afford to go out and get players like Gonzalez, and Crawford.
Unfortunately the crowds at every Patriots, Celtics, and now its even permeated to the Bruins are all the same. Businessmen(and their clients), fairweather fans, woman(and men) who have no idea about the sport and are there for a social event. Overall, just very boring crowds, that either don't pay attention to the majority of the game, or don't care to. Whatever they spent their 150.00 for a ticket, they can do what they want. End rant.
In the end, I don't care. I buy my 8-10 games from a co-worker, and love every second of being there. I am extremely happy about the Crawford signing(ridiculous contract aside). He has been a favorite of mine to watch for some time now. Looking forward to opening day.Comment

And baseball wonders why the World Series gets lower TV ratings than an NFL regular season game...Comment

Re: Red Sox agree to terms with Carl Crawford
An NFL regular season game doesn't beat out a World Series game featuring the Yankees or the Red Sox."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Red Sox agree to terms with Carl Crawford
Thats not entirely it. Football is popular due to a few small things it has going for it.
1. Short season. Its far easier to invest time and emotion as a fan in 16 or so games as opposed to 162.
2. Fantasy Football. I'm amazed by how many people play it.
3. Football Pools. When is the last time your work had a baseball pool that people were so invested in week to week?
4. Betting/Football cards. Football is easily the most popular sport to bet on, and the easiest for people to understand.
5. Somewhat fast paced, quick game times.
Baseball is a long, involving grind. It has a slow pace, and I totally understand its not for everyone. While the parity in other sports might be better than that of baseball, you still have X amount of teams that have a slim to none chance of going far in their respective sport/league.Comment

Re: Red Sox agree to terms with Carl Crawford
Not like this was some shocking, **** deal or something. Everyone knew it was coming after Werth's contract. I'm not surprised it came from Boston. Moreno doesn't believe in spending this kind of money on one player, unless absolutely necessary. Is Crawford a guy who will carry the franchise or anything? No. But he's an awesome offensive player. Is that worth that contract? Who knows, given today's baseball economics. If Werth gets what he got, why shouldn't Crawford get this? If Zito got what he got, why shouldn't Cliff Lee get a dumptruck full of gold bars?
I think he would have thrived with the Angels. Perfect offense to feature a guy like him. But still, Crawford-Pedroia-Adrian-Youk-Ortiz? That's pretty scary on paper.Comment

Re: Red Sox agree to terms with Carl Crawford
Good deal for the Red Sox - not amazing because I think they overpaid for Crawford, but good none the less.
To speak on the Red Sox fans - I'm a born and raised Boston native - still live out here and I can say there are more people who go to Fenway to hear Sweet Caroline in the 8th inning than to watch a baseball game.
75-80% of Fenway Park, especially in the bleacher sections, are fans who have no idea what is going on. I remember sitting at Fenway during a Red Sox/Yankees game and a girl turned around to ask me who Jason Varitek is. It's a joke and it's the reason why my wife and I travel away from Fenway to catch games.
The "Fenway Experience" is a waste. You get a better view watching on TV and don't have to pay a fortune on tickets/food/beer.
With that said - Go SoxComment

Girl bandwagoners are the worst. A lot of them don't even know the sport, let alone to root for it.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
NFL - Buffalo Bills
MLB - Cincinnati Reds

You should see the Sox "fans" that you up in Angels stadium when Boston is in town. Talk about buffoonery.Comment

Re: Red Sox agree to terms with Carl Crawford
No joke - I hate going to Red Sox games now. Hate it. I went a few times with my father from around 01-04 and loved every second of it because the people there were fans that had suffered with this team for years and years and still stuck with them. Since '04, you get too many "fans" who are more concerned with saying the Yankees suck, or wearing their hip Sox attire, and all of that. I'd rather sit around at home and watch the games.
The "real" Red Sox fans are some of the best in the country because they truly were rewarded and they feel lucky to have witnessed what they have. It's the same with every single Boston team these days with the Pats/C's/Sox success. I remember starting to watch football and seeing the Patriots terrible. I remember starting to watch basketball and seeing the Celtics suck. I remember starting to watch baseball and seeing the Red Sox not be that good. I feel blessed as a sports fan to have been able to be a fan of these teams this past decade.
So don't worry, non-Sox fans who hate "those Sox fans"....most of us around here hate them, and are embarrassed by them, too.
Now, as for the move - I have to say Crawford has been my favorite non-Sox player for years. I had a four year span where I drafted him in the top 5 of my fantasy baseball drafts because I liked him that much and wanted him on my team. To know that he'll be a Sox player this coming season...I couldn't be happier. Talk about completely different levels of expectations from last season to this season.
PS - Crawford, Ellsbury, and Drew in the outfield? I like that. A lot.Last edited by Beantown; 12-09-2010, 12:04 PM.Comment
