Re: The Hot Stove League Thread

Heard about the news of Pujols this morning on some website and thought to myself "NO,THIS MUST BE A TYPO, LEMME CHECK MLB.COM", I go and check and I seriously couldn't breathe for a second. I will get to see one of my favorite Dominican players in person but also.. he will be facing the Yankees. -hides-

As for C.J Wilson, I was hoping the Yankees would sign him up but we'll see what he has to show against us next season.
Why did I move here? I guess it was the weather.

Rockies trade Ian Stewart and Casey Weathers to Cubs for Tyler Colvin and DJ LeMahieu.

      I like the trade.

I'd have to agree. It's a good trade for both sides. Hopefully the change of scenery helps Colvin and Stewart.

Nice job by Colorado on getting LeMahieu from the Cubs as well. I think he could turn out to be a solid player.

          I like it as well.

For the Cubs Side. I think Stewart needed a Change of scenery. Weathers is a project, but he has good stuff. DJ just isn't going to develop the power necessary needed for a 3B.(But would be a good fit at 2nd For Colorado).

Just glad we got something of value for Colvin.

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread

The biggest winners for today are the Cardinals and Rangers.

CJ Wilson. While I'm not sure if he will become Barry Zito, he's not worth. There's absolutely no way he's worth the same contract as Verlander and Felix Hernandez. Wilson is alright, but he is bad in the postseason and he's just not a 77 million dollar guy.

And Pujols, yikes. Obviously this deal is going to be completely horrible and potentially team destorying down the line. There's no way for me to justify paying him 25 million in his late thirties and early 40's.

Will it be great for them in the next 3-4 years? Totally. But he has slowly started to decline. 10 more years? Thank goodness for the DH.

The Cardinals are in great shape because they don't have to deal with that money. They already have a lot of great young players, and they will have plenty of money to build around them for the next decade. It's hard to bring in quality players (and deal with raises/new deals) to the young guys like Freese and Craig who will get paid in a few years, when you have to give 25 million to an aging guy in Pujols. If I was a Cardinals fan, I'd be happy right now. And especially happy in about 6 years.

If the Angels are trying to shop some players, the Tigers would defenitely want Bourjos if they can't land Cespedes. A Bourjos deal was rumored early in the offseason for the Tigers. They would want him to play LF in place of Delmon Young, assuming Cespedes doesn't sign. And If Kendrick was available, the Tigers would definitely make a nice offer for him.

And my last point, the Dotel signing was a heck of a deal for Detroit. They potentially have one of the best bullpens in baseball. Valverde, Benoit, and Dotel 7-8-9 is great. Alburquerque had a 1.47 ERA last year, and the two lefties Coke and Schlereth are very solid. Only 3 million for Dotel, and it was a good move. Now we can get rid of Ryan Perry.

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread

I wish MLB could fix the system they operate under. The only way to get great years from a player, is to pay him big bucks for those years, and then big bucks for all the years he's declining after that.

Like, if you want 5 great years from Pujols, you have to pay him for those 5 and then 5 more years where he isn't worth it at all and just hurting the team with a monster contract. It's like you are paying double. All it does is cripple teams with old players who are owned a ton of money. Who wants Jayson Werth in 7 years? Pujols when he's 41? Jose Reyes will be a corpse with no legs in 6 years at this rate. Santana is going to make 25 million dollars next year. 8 years from now, Joe Mauer will still be making more than 20 million dollars at a season.

That's why we see so many free agents get way more money they should. I don't think you could ever justify paying ANY player 1 quarter of a billion dollars. Especially when they are past their prime years. It would make more sense to give out 10 year monster contracts to guys who are 25 and have 7 good years left ahead of them, but that can't happen with the way the league is set up. So instead, the older players are getting the big money although they are less likely to be worth it.

But Cabrera, the thing is, a player can say "I will only sign for 10 years" and someone will do it. It would take an act of all the owners getting together and deciding as a whole not to sign someone for that long, which of course is collusion. It's lose-lose for the GMs, someone will always take the bait under the guise of "win now"

I actually don't hate the 10 year deal for LA. In like 7 years or whatever, Pujols will still be one hell of a DH.

Overpaid, sure, but they'll still get a buttload of production out of him.

Had he taken St. Louis's 10 year deal, that would've ended up as some sort of disaster for them down the road. Eventually, he'll be a statue standing at 1B.

As glad as I am that Pujols is out of the NL Central (Never thought I would say that), I still don't understand it. Why?

The guy is home grown talent through and through. Since he came to the states, he has been in Missouri. Went to JUCO there, came up through the Cardinals system and brought them a ton of success and 2 WS titles. Why wouldn't a player want to finish where he started? They definitely weren't booting him out of town. It was the exact opposite in St. Louis. Seems like there is no loyalty any more. Honestly, the money is just that, money. At the end of the day, when you're that rich, is there really that big of a difference between $200 and $250 million? Especially when he has endorsements on top of that?

                        I don't know. I just don't understand these players i guess.

Not sure this one falls totally on Pujols. They had 2 years to get a deal done, and couldn't get it done.

Apparently the Marlins actually offered more money to both CJ Wilson and Albert Pujols than the Angels did.
