I am pretty stunned that Verlander won the MVP. It would be one thing if there wasn't a strong field of candidates, but I think there were plenty of everyday players that were deserving. I haven't seen the voting yet...interested to see how it shook out.

Bull****. Grandy got robbed. Not even in the top 3 what a joke.

Verlander played in 34 games. Sorry but pitchers don't deserve the MVP at all.

Well I can't say i'm surprised by this. Pitchers have won it in the past but if any pitcher in recent (10-15 years) times deserved it more than Verlander it would be Pedro Martinez in '98.

Oh well....Nice to see J-Bau get some dap as he has 232 points and finished 3rd (which is what I thought would happen)

Granderson got robbed lol. Yes he had a nice season power wise, everything else he was trailing compared to other candidates.

280 points for Verlander, 242 for Ellsbury, and 231 for Bautista if I remember correctly.

I think Ellsbury and Bautista had better cases than Granderson. I would of voted Bautista. I really didn't care who won, just hate Pitchers winning this award.

                  Re: 2011 Awards Thread

During the year I was back and forth on whether Verlander was deserving to win, but I never really thought he would. It wasn't until recently when I realized had a real shot.

He's deserving, his numbers were great. The amount of games he played is irrelevant in my opinion because the numbers show that his impact in those games was so big. He had as big an impact as everyday players. He was the only reason the Tigers were over .500. He was extremely valuable regardless of how much he played.

Ellsbury was second, and Cabrera was 5th. That's all I know. One writer left Verlander off, and another listed him 8th.

                  I bet Bautista was third.

Nice season? He led the league in RBI and Runs scored. He was 2nd in the league in HRs by 2 to Bautista.

RBI and Runs Scored? Two statistics that are entirely a result of his teammates.

.262 BA, .362 OBP, .916 OPS. Great numbers but not MVP worthy. Bautista and Cabrera both were almost .100 points higher in OBP, they were .100 points higher in OPS, and Cabrera hit .75 points higher.

If Bautista or Cabrera hit in the Yankees lineup they would drive in 140 runs easily and score a lot of runs too. That's why those stats are pointless. You can only get RBI's if the guys in front of you are on base.

If you're going to argue who deserves this award, use stats that can be controlled by a player. You know, the ones that matter.

Right. Granderson did nothing to get those stats. Entirely the rest of the lineup.

Did you ever come to this forum before today? Where do you see people here arguing "so and so is better because of his RBI totals"? That doesn't happen.

Do you even know what OPS is?

You're never going to win an argument using traditional stats only. This is SABR land.

LOL @ the Rangers beat writer who gave Michael Young a 1st-place vote. Way to take your job seriously. Might as well allow fan voting.

Why are we debating Granderson. He's right where he should be, what about the guy that Led AL in HRs, SLG, OPS, .001 off in OBP, and 1 of 6 to knock in 100. Also led his team to a .500 Record is probably toughest division in baseball.
