Great news for Tiger fans, hopefully Inge can get it going this year, I'd be thrilled with a .250 season with good defense at 2nd and probably some at 3rd too.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Sorry, but Inge posting even a .250 average (he's hit above .215 once since 2006) would not compare to Raburn, who's proven to be a .285/.850 OPS when he's healthy and starting. And Santiago, who is a better defender than Inge at 2nd base, hits about .270 every year and doesn't strike out nearly as much as Inge.

The only time "good news' and "inge" can be in a sentence is if he is released. He hasn't been average in 7 years. SEVEN!

Inge could have a career season (2006), and Raburn would still have a better year. Raburn was almost an all star level hitter in 2009 and 2010, and injuries slowed him down last year. He can rake. Santiago has made 1 error at 2nd base in 3 years, hits .270, switch hitter, and is a good situational hitter. He puts the bat on the ball, and can lay down a bunt.

Inge doesn't bunt, his ego is too big for that. He doesn't draw walks, hit for average, hit for power, or flat out make contact. The Tigers have been around for 100 years and nobody has ever struck out more than him. All time franchise leader.

He's terrible as a baseball player, has a HUGE ego, he is beyond delusional, he has no room on this team yet alone any team.

His quotes this week were hilarious. He was the very last player to show up to camp, and surrounded by 15 reporters he says "I didn't show up any earlier because I didn't want to take attention away from Prince Fielder." HAHAHAAHAH.

First of all, nobody would ignore Prince to give Inge attention. I mean nobody. Second of all, by showing up last, he got a whole swarm of reporters, which is exactly what he wanted. Showing up when everybody else did is probably the best way to avoid attention, am I right?

This guy is delusional. He's past delusional. He thinks he was just unlucky last year and he has said that. He's hit above .213 ONCE since 2006. ONCE! And that 1 year he hit a sparking .241 thanks to a big opening month.

Everybody is hoping for a career ending injury with him. He ruins my whole days when he says anything to a newspaper. Never have I seen somebody so out of touch with reality.

It's just not fair that guys like Carlos Guillen, who is the ultimate teammate, hard worker, totally unselfish, standing up for teammates, just PERFECT professional attitude gets hurt every year while Brandon Inge still trots around Detroit like he runs the place. Getting everything he wants, complaining when he doesn't get it, just terrorizing this organization. I wish we could have Guillen in a wheelchair at 2nd base than Inge.

But the point being Leyland loves Inge and he will be playing whether we think he sucks or not, so I'd rather see him working out with Barwis, improving his strength, speed, and agility, than not doing anything, wasting around for 300 ABs before finally getting DFA'd in the 2nd half.

Also, don't forget Raburn's career fielding % is on par with Cabrera at third, so if Inge can maintain above average defense at 2nd, it would help the middle infield, especially with Peralta's limited range at short. As far as which option at 2nd HAS the best range, it would be Santiago, but he's never shown he can be an every day player. He works great as a platoon guy, though. The issue to me will be if they try and do a 3 man platoon @ 2nd or if Raburn will pull OF/DH duties.

Maintain above average defense at 2nd?

I don't even think it's reasonable to expect average defense there.

Re: 2012 Spring Training Discussion Thread

The notion that Santiago can't be an everyday player is totally false. He never had the chance despite hitting .275 since 2006. He actually has better numbers when playing consistently. He's a switch hitter who can control the bat and play a great 2nd base. Leyland has always said "not an everyday" player but all the numbers says he is. No player is effective playing once a week. Guys play better when they are in the lineup everyday (that is why Raburn doesn't hit in the first half) and Ramon is no different. The fact Inge was considered an 'everyday player' for 5 years and Santiago wasn't is just plain stupidity on the Tigers part.

For once though, Inge is not being handed a job. He has to outhit Raburn to win the job. Leyland has said this. Here's what Raburn can do:

          2009: .891 OPS
          2010: .814 OPS
2011: .729. Played hurt in the first half, but .950 OPS from July-October.

Raburn is an all star level hitter ready to break out. He is known for his big 2nd halfs, where he has a career .870 OPS and 1.000+ in September. People say he just can't in the first half, but never played much in the first half. He would get the chance to play everyday in the 2nd half and he raked. Last year, he was going to be a starter, and hit pretty well in April. But then he hurt his thumb and slumped for 2 months? When it healed, he put up great numbers. If he is in the lineup everyday he will give you great production.

Not to mention, Raburn always has great numbers in ST. For Inge to win the job, he will have to have a GREAT spring, and Raburn will have to slump. Both are unlikely. And even if that happens, Santiago is still a much better player than Inge. So justice still won't be served.

And defensively Raburn is horrible, but he hits. So he plays. Defense doesn't matter when you are talking about a guy with potential to put up a .900 OPS.

In a perfect world, Inge is the utility man. Raburn gets the majority of the time at 2nd base, and he sees some time in LF as well. Santiago will get his starts, and Inge is a defensive replacement.

There is no reason to have 2 backup 2nd basemen. It's pointless. It makes no sense. Inge not only takes time away from better players (Santiago) which makes the team worse, he will take the roster spot of a young player with POTENTIAL (Danny Worth.) Worth is above average defensively at 3 positions, can hit around .250 and he's young. Room to improve. But Inge will take this guys spot. It's rediculous. He is on this team for the fact he's Brandon Inge and the females and blind fans love him.

He hurts the team when he's on the bench because a young guy could use that experience. He hurts the team when he plays because he sucks. He hurts the team in the future because Worth won't get a proper chance to develop.

Let's just sum this whole thing up. 35 year old, 2 bad knees, .235 career hitter, has hit .218 in the past in the 6 years.

Who wants this guy? Why is he in the league?

And he's taking time away from a solid player in Santiago. And Danny Worth, who is 26, excellent defender, steady bat? Nah he won't get a shot with the big league club even though he's done his time in Toledo AND has hit in his little ML time. No way to justify him not being on the team.

I'm a supporter of nearly everything Dombrowski does. Leyland always drives me crazy with his moves, but they usually work out when it's all said and done. They are good baseball men. But this Inge situation, they handle it with their heart and emotion, not logic. Before, they liked him too much to sit him. Now, they are too scared to release him because of the backlash they will see from the fans who have never visited Baseball reference, and that's alot. They just simply lack the balls to cut him. It's insane. It makes me and plenty other fans, insane.

I'm sorry to take up so many pages. But whenver Inge is mentioned, I can't help it.

The only good thing Inge ever did with Detroit was get hurt so we traded for Peralta.

Here's a quote from a scout who watched Yu Darvish pitch this week.

I didn't get to see him live before this week and what I've noticed right away is the balance and delivery. Many guys will fall off the mound to one side or the other, but he is on a straight line to home plate. He mechanics look nearly flawless. You can see why he's had so much success. He can repeat that delivery consistently.

I thought he went at it a little harder today than the other day. The velocity was up. I was told he didn't really throw a splitter or a changeup in Japan, but I saw him throw a splitter in his bullpen session and a change and they had movement and good location. He's got a bunch of pitches and I think he's trying to see what may work and what won't.

He's an athlete and you have to like the build on him. He goes about his business.
One of the most important ways to have great command is to repeat your delivery, and it's encouraging to hear that Darvish is capable of doing that. And now some quotes from Mike Olt and Jake Skole.

“I’ve never seen anybody mike the ball move like that,” said Olt, who played collegiately at Connecticut, at Class last year and in the prospect-laden Arizona Fall League in October. “Most of the guys I’ve seen may have movement to one side or the other, but he had the ability to make it up move in and out, whether it was a two-seamer or four-seamer.”

He especially flustered 2010 first-round pick Jake Skole, a left-handed hitter. Skole swung at six of the 12 pitches he saw and missed all of them.Skole chased a splitter in the dirt and also took an awkward swing at a fastball in.

“He just had crazy action,” Skole said. “He could move the ball away from you, then come right back inside.”
Man, I can't wait for Darvish's first regular season start.

Wow it really sounds like Darvish will have tremendous success at least early on. It'll be interesting to see how he looks later in the year with the heat in Texas (he's probably never had to pitch in those kind of conditions before) and the general length of the MLB season.

Darvish is going to be a pretty good pitcher IMO.

                            Chris Perez injured

The club revealed on Sunday that Perez is sidelined with a strained left oblique, and the pitcher will likely need at least four to six weeks to recover from the injury. That does not necessarily mean that the closer will be unavailable for the April 5 opener against the Blue Jays. "I wouldn't say that," said Indians head athletic trainer Lonnie Soloff, when asked if Perez was doubtful for Opening Day. "We'll have to see how things go and how he responds with his throwing sessions once he gets back on a mound." Behind Perez on the bullpen depth chart are setup men Vinnie Pestano and Tony Sipp, along with Rafael Perez and Joe Smith. Pestano is the best target for fantasy owners who are looking for a late-round sleeper in mixed-league drafts.
Why did I move here? I guess it was the weather.
