    Is that correct?

If so, is there a clause that the umpire can make a judgement a rule a double play would have occured?

Reason I'm asking is because this just happened in the Pirate game but the runner avoided the ball and a DP was turned. I'm curious to see what would have happened if he just got hit.
Actually, I think the runner is out and the hitter is safe...at least off the top of my head.

If a guy intentionally got hit (and it was obvious) to keep a DP out of play, I think the umps could award it.

they always give a fielders choice rulling and i believe more often then not the guy going to 2nd is ruled out by the ump but batter still goes to 1st. dont think its even fair anyways to assume there would be a double play because there could always been an error in someway shape or form or the runner going to 2nd could take out the fielder at 2nd (as long as it doesn't look intentional)

It's freaking weird watching the Yankees playing at San Diego.

Umpires can never assume a double play. So if the runner is struck by the ball, he is out and the batter gets 1st base. It's ruled a Fielder's Choice.

Chew bubblegum every Red Sox home game. They have been undefeated up until yesterday with it, so 10-1 or so.

One sock on, and on the left foot before the game...once we score switch feet. This one was earlier in the year.

Time to see if another develops with Peavy on the mound tonight.

I was gonna post about this earlier tonight but didn't want to be all "go A's, Rangers suck".

Garza calling Sogard a f***ing p*ssy on the field, fine you're pissed. I get it, they got one over on you. It's part of the game though, leave it in the field.

In Garza's world, it's "manly" to publicly tell another man's wife to shut up, yet "unmanly" to try to win a baseball game. Go figure.

And not like Sogard was bunting with a 10 run lead, it was a great call in that situation. This isn't the first time he's cried about something after the fact either. According to Yahoo!, "Garza took great exception to the play, possibly due to his past fielding struggles, and more specifically his inability to make quality throws off flat ground."

Really Matt? And you're going to call out a guys wife because you suck at fielding? OK.

I was a big fan of Garza during his time in Chicago. He was one of my favorite players on the team. But, I'm not going to try to defend that. That's just dumb.

                        Twitter isn't for everyone.

Exactly. Like 19 said, it's not like Sogard did it with a huge lead or to break up a no hitter. Garza is the one who needs to man up in this situation.

There's a reason Matt Garza has been traded from every team he's played for so far. Add this to the list.
