Re: MLB Off-Topic 2013
That would be a hit. For it to be an out he has to catch it in the air. And if he catches it on the bounce before it bounces over the wall or out of play, it's not classified as a ground rule double. A ground rule double must bounce out of play in fair territory, for it to be considered a ground rule double.
Hope that helped.
In the Sox game yesterday, the outfielder jumped up the wall like he intended to catch it, but it had already hit the ground.Boston Red Sox

The details of his death are extremely odd, He went out in a pontoon boat with his friend, jumped in the water, and never resurfaced. I'm not accusing anybody, but does anybody else find that extremely odd?Comment

Since he still has possession of the ball he could theoretically throw out the runner headed to second.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic 2013
What do people think? Is there a realistic shot of Montreal Expos ever returning to the MLB or not? I just feel like it won't work. It's hard enough trying to get NBA or MLB guys to want to play in Canada, but playing in a diff country, in a city where many people speak a language that players don't know, don't know how much of a shot they'd have of attracting free agents in a day where many guys are getting 10-20M deals.
And who knows how much fan support there'd really be for along time. Would Expos be able to average 30,000+ fans on a consistent basis or what?
Though it'd be much easier for Canada to get another MLB team than it would NBA, since NBA it's hard enough getting players to want to stay in a city like Minnesota,New Orelans and stuff, getting someone to want to stay in a city like Vancouver or Montreal in NBA...no chance of happening in the "superteam era".Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic 2013
Well first of all, Montreal doesn't even have a good location to build a ballpark in. The proposed Molson Park in the late '90s was supposed to be right next to the Bell Centre but that piece of real estate has been developed since then. So from that perspective alone it's a real hard sell.
I will say though that there probably is a fanbase willing to buy tickets for a new Expos franchise and in a lot of ways I think marketed as a NATIONAL team you could see a fanbase similar to the Blue Jays in terms of attendance.
As for players and such? I think Montreal is still somewhat of a party city and yes the French language is an issue but there's still a pocket of the community that is anglophone.
If they can get some rich Canadian guy to get the ball rolling I think it could work (move the Rays to Montreal and that team would be selling out every night) however, I think that a more realistic option would be a team in Vancouver.
As for the NBA, David Stern has expressed regret over the mishandling of the Vancouver situation and if that league were to ever expand again I could see a 2nd shot at Vancouver happening.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: MLB Off-Topic 2013
Vancouver MLB team will NEVER happen. We're not a good baseball market (trust me), and we're too close to Seattle. A return to Montreal is much more likely to succeed (and that's not saying much). The NBA coming back to Vancouver is possible, but why bother? No good players would ever want to play here.

I doubt the MLB will even sniff Montreal with all the rampant civic corruption. Not that it isn't in other cities, but Montreal is pretty extreme.Comment

That's a good point, honestly Montreal and Toronto are in a competition for the most embarrassing municipal administrations in North America.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: MLB Off-Topic 2013
Quick rules question:
Runner on first breaks on a hit and run and see the ball is hit right at him. If he see that it would be a sure double play if fielded how would it be ruled if he got hit?
My understanding of the rule is when a baserunner is hit, he goes back to first and the batter is out.
Is that correct?
If so, is there a clause that the umpire can make a judgement a rule a double play would have occured?
Reason I'm asking is because this just happened in the Pirate game but the runner avoided the ball and a DP was turned. I'm curious to see what would have happened if he just got hit.Comment
