Re: Who has the best starting 5 now: Cubs or Astros?

Well, if Jayson Stark's opinion matters at all, it goes like this:

    1. Astros
    2. Yankees
    3. Red Sox
    4. A's
    5. Cubs

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/column...amp;id=1710604

The Yankees #2??? I think Stark was smoking something. I'd go something like this:

    1. Astros
    2. Red Sox
    3a. Cubs
    3b. A's
    4. Marlins
    5. Yankees

That's the article I was talking about on page 2 of this thread.

It isn't Jason Stark's opinion. ESPN polled scouts, GMs, etc., and that was how they ranked the best rotations. Stark just wrote up the results.

They also show in that article that three of the top four strikeout pitchers in the NL over the last 2 years are Cubs - Wood (1), Prior (3), and Clement (4).

They also say that if the Cubs sign Maddux, the list goes out the window. And if you're voting for the best rotation for 2006, it's definitely the Cubs.

Ahh, Sorry Cub. I must've skipped over that. Well I guess I disagree with scouts, GM's etc... I really think they gave too much credit to the Yankees starting 5. It's not a terribly staff by any means, but I also don't think it's the 2nd best in MLB.

Personally I think those guys are nuts to put the Cubs behind the A's and Red Sox, who have 4 out of 5 starters for their rotation, when the Cubs Have Juan Cruz ready to go should the Maddux deal fall through. I'm not sure who the A's have, but I think it's Harang. The Red Sox could choose anyone at this point, but the point is that a full rotation is worth a helluvalot more than 80% of one.

No question, the Cubs' rotation is stout, and if they sign Maddux, it would be hard to rank them behind the Astros. I think they are pretty evenly matched as it is. The stros have some young talent in the mix, but the Cubs' guns are all pretty young. If they stay healthy and intact, they ought to be the premiere rotation for the next several years.

Actually it's Rich Harden, who has the makings to be another stud out of the A's stable,
