I don't know, man. To this day, I still think Ichiro could've caught that ball. It's smart if it's high off the wall, but I think that's extremely catchable for his abilities (or at least worth trying to catch).

To me, that ends up being a dumb play as a result.

I wasn't talking about an aggravating game.

I was talking about a heart breaking game.

Yes, sorry I used the wrong terminology. That is a better word.

Besides the point of my post by shifting my own narrative, anyway. Ichiro made what I think was a useful tactic in the wrong scenario, and I think it cost them the game (as a walk-off single was hit two batters later).

91 Puckett, 92 Carter, 96 Leyritts. For as much success as we had there was a TON of heartache. We were the Bills until we finally won in 95.

You can possibly argue the 96 loss then collapse was worse than what we did to the Pirates in 92, but I really don't think so.

For my money that 96 team was the best one of all of them.

I feel like I could name dozens. My personal top three.

              1. I'll go with the infamous Rick Monday 9th inning homer against the Expos in Game 5 of the 1981 NLCS.

              2. Game 7 of the 1985 ALCS when the 99-win Blue Jays (still the win record for the francise) lost at home with all-time Jays great Dave Stieb on the mound against Kansas City. (It was also the first year the ALCS went to seven games).

              3. Game 162 of the 1987 when the Tigers completed a three-game sweep of the Blue Jays to win the division by a game. Each of the three games was a one-run loss. The Jays lost their last seven games of the season to blow the division. I think that team would have destroyed the Twins in the ALCS.

On a non-partisan basis, seeing the Rangers one strike away from winning the 2011 World Series on two separate occasions against St. Louis and losing was definitely heart breaking, especially considering they've never returned.

Small side notes here on Verlander and Pedro

                Verlander
                - Last 3 full seasons he's pitched he's been good for 19.6 WAR (6.3, 7.4, 5.9)
-Those same three seasons his ERA has been 2.28 (2.52, 2.58, 1.75)
                - 612 IP with 775Ks

                Pedro 98-2000
                - 29 WAR (7.5, 9.8, 11.7
                - 2.23ERA (2.89, 2.07, 1.74)
                - 662 IP with 848Ks
                - None of this includes Pedro's last year in MON in 97 where he posted 9.0 WAR, 1.90 ERA, 241.1 IP, 305K

I didn't do this to dump on Verlander (big fan of the guy). I just kept seeing how Verlander's 1.75 was the best since Pedro's 1.74 in 2000. I simply wanted to see and demonstrate how much better than the field Pedro's 1.74 was then Verlander's 1.75. I also didn't want to do a 4 year stretch because Pedro's 97 season was in the NL without a DH.

2011 NLDS game 5 vs Cardinals. I was there in person that was an excruciating 1-0 loss capped off with Ryan Howard blowing out his Achilles on the last out.

It was essentially the end of the best Phillies run in my life. They did make a rally in the 2nd half of 2012 to keep it interesting until maybe mid September. After that it was a lot of years like the late 90s for me.

If I was born earlier than 1990 then 93 World Series Game 6 would be on this list.

I would not put this year WS Game 6 in the conversation with the above games.

I mean, comparing prime Pedro to age 37 to 39 Verlander isn't fair (not that prime Verlander would fare better, since Pedro's peak was higher).

Funny thing is, if you compare Pedro's last 3 years of his career (35-37) and Verlander's last 3 (37-39), even with the fact that Verlander missed all of 2021 with TJS, they both pitched 181 innings (2 outs difference) with Justin's number blowing Pedro's out of the water in term of rates. JV's superpower is his longevity.

as fantastic as all of Verlander's on the field stats are,
his off-the-field accomplishment of Kate Upton is still my favorite

I mentioned specifically the comparison was done because of of all the ERA talk this offseason. I'm well aware one was at his peak and the other is Captain America

They dominated the NL that year and after a back and forth series it comes down to Jeff Suppan vs Oliver Perez, who was a throw in to the Roberto Hernandez trade after Duaner Sanchez got injured in a 3am cab accident, now he’s starting the biggest game of the season. After the Endy Chavez catch I though there is no way they’re losing. Down by two after a Molina HR, in the 9th the Mets load the bases and Adam Wainwright proceeds to rip my heart out with the curveball to Beltran. The World Series losses to the Yankees and Royals never bothered me because the series got out of hand so quickly, and the 07 and 08 collapses I could see coming. 06 seemed like their year, I never would have imagined it would be that group’s only trip to the post season

I was there. The ride home was quiet and gloomy. It beat the Scioscia HR in 88. Well, maybe tied 2000 WS Game 1.

I don't mind sponsorship, just make it match the jersey and not stick out.

They won't follow the Leafs in terms of the company...unless that company is willing to pay the most.

Which makes me wonder...what if Bell actually is the top bidder for sponsorship patch? Rogers would refuse and take the 2nd highest offer to spite them wouldn't they?
