I actually like this. It is becoming too much of thing. Plus it's all about the dumb logic of "protect pitchers' arms at all costs," which the analytics crowd has gone too far with. This just stops it from spreading beyond what it already is. I've no doubt it would have otherwise.

Plus, you’re more likely to have a long inning with a position player pitching. Can’t be slowing down the pace of play

I mean that’s easy to get around since surely this won’t apply to Ohtani. Just going to see a lot more position players with a separate position designation as “relief pitcher.”

Then I would say you need to make 10 pitching appearances (or 10IP) as a position player in a season before you are granted that special designation. If we're just theorizing. And those players would need a salary bonus kick-in for that.

Ted Lerner, the billionaire real estate developer whose family bought the Washington Nationals in 2006, has died, the team announced Monday. He was 97.

RIP Ted Lerner. May have been cheap with some of the deals they handed out but compared to the other team down the road you were miles better than that other guy.

just glad Lerner lived long enough to see D.C. win it's first world series championship since 1924,
which coincidentally was 1 year before Lerner was born.
man lived a good, long life. we should all be so blessed

Teams must designate players as a two way player and those players must meet certain criteria before earning that status.

They must’ve met this criteria in either the previous season or current season and this criteria is not cumulative (pitch 10 innings in ‘22 and 10 innings in ‘23):

                - pitched at least 20 major league innings

                - played in at least 20 major league games as a position player or designated hitter, with at least 3 plate appearances in each game

Thanks didn't know there was already a specific designation in place.

So I've been occasionally popping into OS for almost, uh, 20 years now, and most in the baseball and hockey forums know my "secret identity". Strangely enough, I did a spot on a Red Sox podcast a couple weeks ago, in case anyone wants to listen to my supervillain origin story (starts about 15 min in).

If they move to Vegas, would they announce it after the 2023 season (so 2024 is the "farewell season")?

Lived a good long life. Maybe it was a short sample size and later in his career but I didn't care for his color commentary. Even still, he was a voice of MLB Playoffs on FOX that I grew up with, so he's a part of my baseball lore and I respect that about him.

^ I don't think I knew that either! I gotta listen to the podcast as soon as I'm able.

Not stealing from his thunder at all, but just to piggyback on that one of my best friends growing up is the nephew of Steve Rechtschaffner, an EA Sports / BIG developer who was on the Dream Team for their Triple Play baseball video game series. He was the guy who would fall over when the ball was hit to him, but conversely he would also make other players fall over when they tried to field the ball he hit. Basically, he was a really valuable DH haha.
