"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I'm not sure if this correlates or not but I would also assume there are more lefty pitchers since kids aren't forced to write right handed anymore but I'm not sure if that would change anything.MLB: Texas Rangers
Soccer: FC Dallas, Fleetwood Town
NCAA: SMU, UTA
NFL: Dallas Cowboys
NHL: Dallas Stars
NBA: Dallas Mavericks

Re: MLB Off-Topic
What do people think? Could this realistically be something we see happen somewhere down the road in MLB?

I saw Eric Byrnes interview on MLB Network before he went to this, and he suggested that MLB should try out stuff like this, and pitch clocks, during the ASG. Of course the ASG would have to give up "winner gets home advantage in WS" stuff, but would be interesting to see ASG become almost like a trial game. Pro players getting to be guinea pigs for future rule changes, and get to see how they like it,while playing a meaningless game.Originally posted by Gibson88Anyone who asked for an ETA is not being Master of their Domain.
It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.Comment

That is a really weird clause, I've never heard of something like that. I read an article that says the team has a 5 day window after the World Series that allows them to negotiate an extension, which I'm sure if they really wanted him long term they could get it done in that time. I wish I could have a clause like that for my RTTS player lolComment

I'm confused how these automated strike zones adjust for the player's height of their stance while in the box, and when they "lock in."Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I'm sure the umpires union will hate this, but I really like the idea of a computer dictating balls and strikes.
The league wants more offense and a lot of the current scoring woes have to do with how good today's pitchers are and the strategy's revolving around strong bullpens.
Not to mention a very lax strike zone at times. Pitchers are way too good to give them that much leeway.
Without doing anything fancy, they could simply use a computer to shrink the K-zone.
And it would be uniform across the league.
But like Blzer said, I wonder how the computer would adjust to players heights?
I suppose every player could be measured and then this info would be fed to a computer.
That would prevent players from crouching real low to fool the machine?Last edited by Money99; 08-12-2015, 01:26 PM.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Regarding automated strike zone, while I don't think the strike zone is the reason why offense is down because as it's written in the book you'd probably get about the same kind of numbers though offense would be up maybe a tick or two. The problem is that umpires STILL have their own subjective K-zones despite questec being a thing. I've seen situations where balls completely out of the zone were called strikes! At least with something automated that goes by the letter of the law you'll have more consistency and less argument about the veracity of the call. Though I do wonder how a robo ump would handle the knuckle ball which just floats all over the damn place.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Back in the 1950s to about hrm, the early '80s maybe kids were forced to write right handed because it was thought to be an abnormality to be a lefty. There's also the crazy notion that lefties don't live as long as righties etc etc.

Also on RoboUmp, NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I like seeing a little bit of human influence on the game. Umpires are already getting screwed by the MLB. They don't make a lot of money. I think the number is around 80K year minus ALL of their travel expenses.
Red Sox have hired Jerry Dipoto on an interim basis. I hope this means Cherrington is on his way out. And then bring in a new manager while you're at it. Linked here.Comment
