Nothing Stairs said is unreasonable. It just happened to be wrong for that particular hitter. I don't think waiting to see what a guy offers is a foolhardy strategy when it comes to your first time facing a new pitcher.
I just thought it was funny that it happened, and when I went to check the broadcaster ratings it seemed like a funny coincidence that they were ranked 30th. It always sounds funny when they are exactly contradicting of what they want to mention though.

Definitely not going to put him on blast for everything, though. He was making a point about somebody's load and swing (about coiling and casting), and I said his next words for him as he clearly knew what he was talking about. Not to mention, I actually agree with him! I make a statement to my players that I coach all the time, saying my philosophy is I never swing at a new pitcher's first pitch. I want to get a true gauge of his speed, but furthermore I want to time his windup and release, and see that arm angle. Then I get it registered in my head. The more pitches you see, the more wealth of knowledge you have to obtain. He wasn't wrong at all, but it's funny to watch the statement backfire and go, "Oh yeah??"

There are some announcers, like Joe Morgan, who would spend so much time trying to show off that they were right about something. Say somebody hits a home run to the opposite field. Joe would say something like, "And what he did was kept his hands back and waited on that pitch. That was a fastball that he was able to get some backspin on... take a look at the replay right here... see that? Fastball. And there he is waiting... look at his hands right there. He keeps them back a long time." It's one thing to educate the masses, but it's another thing to incessantly try and ensure the people that he knows what he's talking about.

(of course, I probably do the same thing so I'm not one to talk, but then again I'm not a broadcaster either lol)

He choked up quite a bit on his bat though, didn't he?
I wonder if his bat acted more like a 32"?

I give them credit for wanting to mix up the stale gray, but...

I couldn't watch much of the game. The uniforms are THAT offensive to me.

BTW teams have GOT to be more smart about employing the shift. Jean Segura is on 2nd base and the Jays are in the shift....a routine grounder to short turned into an RBI.

Could we at least stop the shift with runners in scoring position damnit?! "sigh"

              Y'know...something just dawned on me.

MLB is the only league where managers and coaches wear the same uniforms and numbers that the players do.

Gotta be more comfortable than the Connie Mack approach.

I was just thinking about this on Sunday when I was coaching softball. I was like, "Good thing I don't have to wear their uniforms."

I think about this kind of often because a podcast I listen to makes fun of it, but I don't mind and am also not sure how to fix it. What else can you do? Are we going to have guys in 3 piece suits storming out of the dugout kicking dirt on home plate? Baseball is both in the summer and mostly outdoors, so it's also a weather issue. If everyone could wear a team hoodie that would be cool, but I don't think the Rangers want to bury a manager everyday over the summer and hire a new one lol. Do you just put 50-60 year old men in t-shirts and shorts and let them go out there? Lol I really have no idea of an alternative outside of wearing the uniform that makes sense to me.

Just do what NFL coaches do and wear some sort of team apparel. Polo, hoodie, warmup jacket.

I think it's kinda funny because it seems like MLB managers are older and larger then other professional coaches. Doesn't lend well to the more form fitting uniforms, mainly the pants.

Just one of those quirks or weird throwbacks that keeps baseball different.

If I ever get to the higher collegiate ranks as a Head Coach, I'm changing this. It's the most annoying thing about baseball, to me.

If the most annoying thing about baseball is that the manager and coaches wear the uniform too, then baseball's in a pretty good place.

Yeah, but something tells me it somehow changes the pace of play and they are going to institute a new rule to require coaches to wear something else.

FWIW, the baseball coach at my school would wear a SNHU Baseball Hoodie during games along with baseball pants.
