Joe Torre needs to be put in a home. Anyone who thinks that a utility INF coming in to pitch is "not fun" is a phony.

Not to get too deep in a dumb hypothetical idea but I don't believe there is anyway to consider it an earned run if that runner were to score.

There are many better options than just "here, have a runner on 2nd!"

Man....Canada is isn't gonna make it out of the 1st round this time around Who knew Russell Martin had knee surgery this offseason? That's gotta be one of the biggest secrets of the winter. Oh well, i'm sure he'll be 100% healthy for the MLB season.

As for the extra inning rule change discussion, I don't like it one bit. It sounds like they're gimmicking it up for the "younger generation" just like the NHL has done with the shootout.

I just don't get what's wrong with an extra inning game.

Yeah, I played in a league when I was 13 that started extra inning games with a runner on 2nd... it was ridiculous. I hope this goes horribly and doesn't progress past rookie ball.

I'd prefer it stay the way it is, but I'm not opposed to change.
At the very least, I'm glad they're trying it in MiLB first to see how it looks.
There's no harm in testing something out if it makes the product better - something the NHL could learn a thing or two about.

Do fans really lose interest in extra inning games? At that point, I think the people still tuning in(still in the stands) are the ones that truly care. The "fairweather/I got better things to do" fans leave by the end of the 8th.

Extra innings is suspenseful because anything can happen at any moment. Every pitch, every baserunner, every hit matters so much more. Putting a runner on 2nd automatically ruins half of that. Not to mention it turns it more into a gimmick of which team has the fastest baserunner and which team is best at sac flying/bunting their way to victory. Last thing we need is MLB turning into NHL where you have games decided by a stupid gimmick.

I think it should have its own thread

I saw an interview with Gregg Zaun today and one thing he talked about was the pace of play. Being a former catcher, he knows better than most about players stepping out of batters box,"fixing" batters gloves, mound visits.

He suggested something I'm sure many have mentioned in the past too and that's to eliminate mound visits. He knows how useless those visits are, and knows that pitchers don't like those mound visits and they really don't have much effectiveness either. His proof of it's uselessness is saying that if pitching coaches can have mound visits, why can't hitting coaches have plate visits for the batter? Sounds pointless doesn't it?

All it does is just waste time. MLB wants to improve pace of play...get rid of mound visits. That was just the opinion from one former MLB catcher, but you know that has to be an opinion shared by many current/former players in regards to mound visits. Only visits to the mound should be pitching changes, outside of that, nobody is allowed out of the dugout.

I think MLB is trying to make me not a fan. This is so freaking dumb I have no words.

I thought having a batter automatically goto first on an intentional walk was dumb but this is flatout asinine.

Yahoo reports that it “has wide-ranging support at the highest levels of the league.”

Starting to get sick of sports nowadays to be honest.

How do the stats work if you gift someone second base? Does it not count as an earned run against the pitcher or an RBI for the hitter? Or do you have to just not count extra inning stats then? Just a terrible idea in general, do people not like extra innings? I've always been a big fan, the longer it goes the better as it opens up the opportunity of position players pitching, which is the holy grail of baseball entertainment.
