The union is now saying that all of the things they agreed to last year, are anti-player. They don't like that the Japanese team posting Shohei will get 20 million while he gets a rookie deal... Which is what they agreed to. I read that this may be a tactic to discourage Shohei from coming over. I guess when they signed the deal so that if you're under 25 you can't get a free agent deal, they were doing it to tell anyone under 25 not to bother coming over. He is trying anyway, so now they have to figure something out. It's insane.

They caved because they didn't want to go straight to an international player draft and it didn't work... Even though we knew even when they signed the last deal that this was coming. If this was my union, I'd be embarrassed.

Ouch...that hurts. I was hoping just Maitan. Hopefully Drew Waters stays...good grief. 1 step forward, 2 steps backwards in our retooling effort. Thanks, Coppy...you're the best.

EDIT - BTW, I saw some guy saying that a fairer punishment for the Braves would have been requiring them to sign Matt Kemp to an extension...that's funny (and would hurt far worse than losing prospects!).

When I watched the AFL Championship game Dan O'Dowd was on and they were talking about this punishment and what it means for the Braves. He said this could set the team back and create a big hole within the system. Essentially the Braves will be behind the rest of the competition in Latin America now.

Coppy really effed you guys over big time.

In total the Braves have been stripped of 12 prospects.

They all become free agents, with some restrictions including the Braves not able to re-sign them.

Yep everyone but the Braves can sign them. They can use the current international signing period money or dip into their 2017/18 bonus pools per Jeff Passan.

12 players, rescinding of a contract for a Korean infielder Bae, international signing restrictions through 2021, and loss of a 3rd round pick in 2018. John Coppolella banned for life. Gordon Blakely banned for a year.

                    I think that's it.

Is it me or is MLB making Atlanta the example here? Banning Coppy just seems like it's a "don't mess with us" statement as I have hard time accepting it's that egregious.

There is NO doubt they are. Here's the thing...ALL teams are doing this. The Red Sox got caught doing the exact same thing 3 years ago and only lost the players (granted, that was Selig and this is Manfred). I think MLB is wanting to make an example of the Braves to scare teams straight.

We don't know how bad it was (hopefully they release the info), but I am with you...this is like Coppy was out back drowning kittens or something.

Yea I read someone say this is on Twitter. They are making an example of the Braves when it comes to breaking signing rules in Latin America.

Just to follow up, I've read a few article this afternoon that Manfred came down heavy in this case because he KNOWS that all the teams have been skirting the rules on the international scene and wants to set a precedent that will deter teams from doing so. I mean, whatever...I'd rather a team get punished on the level of what they actually did instead of being punished for what EVERYONE else is supposedly doing, but that's life.

What they actually did was still bad. I'd say the punishment fits the crime. The Braves were just the first to get caught. If it wasn't the Braves it would have been some other organization.
