The article I read was pretty clear about defining visits. A player going to the mound, other than to clean his spikes in a rainy game, counts. A pitcher walking to a player counts. Basically a pitcher meets with anyone during an AB it counts.

Things that don't count, catcher and pitcher conference between batters, injury concern visits from the manager or staff, and a meeting can also take place after a pinch hitter is announced.

I didn't read anything about a cross up allowance though. That's definitely needed.

There really doesn't need to be a visit for sign crossups. Every team should have a set of signs that the catcher can signal by touching a different part of his body.

      i.e. touch mask it's outs + 1, touch chest protector it's 2nd sign, etc.

We do it at the HS level to reduce the number of mound visits and dead time.

7th visit will require a pitching change. Nothing speeds up a game more than requiring an action that takes 10x the time as a punishment for supposedly slowing the game down.

        **** Rob Manfred.

I don't mind this rule really. In fact, I think Willson Contreras comes out to the mound way too much.

Problem is this system seems too easy to game. A pitcher grabs his arm and suddenly it doesn't count toward the 6.

            Re: MLB Off-Topic

What Manfred should do is simply give the players an ultimatum; if the average time in 2018 is above 2hrs 45min, a pitch clock is introduced for 2019.
            Now it's on the players.
So when they see jackasses who like to step out after every pitch to readjust their straps, or pitchers peacock around the mound or catchers feel the need to visit every inning, the players have nobody but themselves to blame - and maybe they'll keep each other accountable.

As someone who considers Contreras his favorite homegrown talent I fully concur with this. He has to lead the league in mound visits.

Listening to the radio tonight as I drove around they were discussing "how to fix" baseball and kept making reference to "baseball is broken". Sure, if you keep saying something is broken, I guess people will start to believe it is. Some of the solutions they were suggesting were absolutely ridiculous...

I don't understand why people say "baseball, you need to change so I can like you more". How about, if you don't like baseball...fine, don't watch, but baseball is JUST fine the way it is.

Well, baseball is a business and businesses try to meet the lowest common denominator. Every owner wants their team and the game to reach as many fans as possible to make as much money as possible.

There won't be a game left to watch if it stops adapting.

I don't agree. There will always be baseball...it may not be at the level we see today in terms of money or even talent, but the game will always be played. I'm not against adapting, and I'm not saying things shouldn't be looked at, but you would think baseball already died from the way people talk.

I've stated it before on this forum...I read a lot of baseball history stuff, including baseball digests from the 1940's and on. People have been saying the SAME thing for 80 years, and yet baseball continues to get stronger. It's almost like saying baseball is broken is as much a part of baseball as strike three and ball four.

And the game has evolved a ton since the 40s. So maybe that's why it continues to strengthen?

Evolved, but it's still baseball played by the same rules. The discussion I heard tonight was talking about introducing penalties ala football, personal fouls like basketball, taking runs off the scoreboard for major penalties, etc. That's not baseball...and yet the hosts were saying "now you have me excited...this is what baseball needs to be to capture me and my generation."

That's the kind of crap I'm talking about...

I worry when people think too hard about what they hear on AM radio. "Hey this is Jimbo from out in Wheaton and I just wanted to say Duh Bears are gonna win it all next year. I'll hang up and listen to your response." Then Jimbo from Wheaton calls up 97.9 WLUP to tell them he was going to request a song, but they're already rockin'

Chicago has comparatively decent content, but it's more for the amusement of when they let the dumb callers through just to pillory their idiotic opinions for 3 solid hours. Not really for actual contemplation.

This was the Spain & Fitz show on ESPN...it was the HOSTS who were suggesting these things and they were asking callers their thoughts. The callers at least thought it was crazy...they had a few that were on board, but for the most part they all were adverse to their suggestions.
