Love it or hate it the undeniable good news is this will really mess with Boomers timing since they will be going rapid fire.

Only until that last minute. Because the clock can stop until the next ball is hit.

I think the clock for HRD might be done more for TV than anything else. Cause they want to time the event so they'd be able to fit in as much commercials and side stuff as possible, without going over the 3 hour time limit. 8 batters,3 rounds,5 minutes per batter, that means it'd be about 70 minutes total of the HRD. The show(minus commercials) is about 130 minutes long,so there's gonna be ALOT of time wasters throughout the event.

Yes I know, but most of those events were back in the day in the '60s at the very latest.

As for the HR Derby format change? I like it as it adds more meat to the competition rather than just hitting bombs. I agree with others in that it would be cool to see the old competitions like they had back in the day but injury concerns trump everything these days.

They could enhance the experience these days with all the tracking and statistical overlays they can do. Exit velocity, route efficiency, etc
For baserunning, have "fastest baserunner" comp where the person has to run around all the bases in the fastest time(so it'd be like those olympic sprinting events).

For hitting, along with the HRD, have that spray hitting comp. The entire field is divided up into zones, and for each location the ball lands in,the player gets a certain amount of points(harder to hit locations obviously worth the most)

For defense, have a "most accurate fielder" comp. Field ground ball, line drive, pop fly, and then throw and hit specific targets.

For pitching, have "fastest pitch". Just have guys go out and pitch as fast as they can(this one might be an injury hazard? though they'd just be taking the hardest throwing pitchers to begin with,so not like you'd have a 95mph guy trying to beat out someone who can hit 99)

Josh Donaldson is the leading vote getter now. It's amazing how a campaign can generate such success so relatively quickly. He's highly deserving IMO.

For the pitching competition I'd so much rather see a 'control' type of event. Have different areas of the zone that light up and the pitcher has to hit that spot. You get points based on what type of pitch you hit it with (more points for breaking pitch than a fastball) and velocity. You could even use the new technology to measure RPM's, break, movement, etc. To me, that would much more entertaining than just who throws the fastest.

I would love to see a skills competition; my picks:

                            • Best Times
                              • Home to 1B
                              • 1B - 3B
                              • Maybe even a baton-type race with 3 guys (H-1B, 1B-3rd, 3rd-H)
                              • Stolen Base attempt
                            • Best glove
                              • IF
                              • OF
                              • Best DP combo
                              • ...test of range and ability
                            • Best Arm
                              • IF arm
                              • OF arm
                              • Catcher arm
                              • Best team relay
                            • Best bat control
                              • Kind of like what QBs do in throwing drills but for baseballs. This would be machine pitch though or even on a tee.

...there's so much that MLB could do in a skills competition to really heighten the ASG and increase awareness of their young players. I really wouldn't mind, if they did this, that they push the ASG to Wednesday and don't start play again until Saturday so pitchers can potentially be included -- granted they take away the home-field advantage junk.

Never going to happen because of injury concerns.

I would hate if my teams catcher strained his shoulder throwing down to second in a skills competition and went on the DL.

Plus, the guys that don't make the all star game actually love the three day break and you can't have a true skills competition with only representatives from the all star teams.

With Cano playing like dog doo for my Mariners, there aren't a lot of "elite" 2nd basemen in the AL. Maybe what Kipnis and Pedroia? My ootp franchise needs a 2nd baseman, and I have no idea who to trade for lol
