    Re: MLB Off-Topic

Apparently MLB owners are discussing issues with tanking in the MLB?

I don't get how in MLB of all sports, that'd be a problem. Even if you build a roster designed to get you good draft picks, in MLB, we all know how draft positions really don't mean much outside of round 1. Even 1st overall picks, while we might have big names like Price,Strasburg,Harper and so on being taken 1st overall, majority of the time we see the best player in the draft not even be a 1st overall.

In other sports like NBA or NHL,it's diff cause the #1 spot has produced many big names in their sports today like Lebron,Griffin,Davis,Crosby,Ovechkin,Stamkos among others,so there's a high chance of drafting a franchise player.

You're missing the biggest point...it's more about the draft pool money than the pick itself. The number pick always get a lot of money to sign their players. For instance last year the Dbacks got over 8 million to use to sign Dansby Swanson. Now if they don't use all of that 8 million on Swanson they can use it to sign other players. And the Phillies this year have the highest draft pool and international money I think. And still have money to spend in FA when they want to.

I don't think you understand how the draft pool works.

It's not money given to them as you make it sound. It's with regards to how much of their own money they can spend without penalty.

Sadly, there's no end in sight either.

OK yea that's my bad but the overall point still stands. The teams want the ability to spend extra and not get penalized for it rather than the top pick.

If teams are trading off useful parts (most likely players worth more than, say, $10 million) for an extra $2 million in the draft, they're doing it wrong.

Lets take the training wheels off, let teams trade picks and expand the possible options a rebuilding team has.

I thought they changed it to allow teams to trade picks starting this year?

What they changed is the ability to trade players selected in the Draft right away. Like with Swanson, previously D-backs would had to wait a year before being able to trade him.

Still no: "I'm shopping the 1st overall pick because someone might interested in picking this Bryce Harper-esque prospect and will trade for X,Y and Z MLB ready pieces".

You can trade a drafted prospect upon completion of the World Series (?) and the competitive balance picks can be traded. One of those is what you're thinking of.

I must've been thinking of the competitive balance picks.

Probably. That's been in effect for a couple years. Off the top of my head, the Marlins traded one for a bad reliever, and it was included in the Cespy deal to Boston because he wouldn't have a comp pick.

Yes, losing on purpose, mostly by crafting terrible rosters on purpose is a serious problem in baseball. And worse, it's openly cheered on by fans and media because it's "the new normal" in other sports. It's a ****ing travesty and it's destroyed my interest in multiple other sports.

Don't let the same thing happen to baseball. Kill the notion before it metastasizes into the cancer that has devoured so much of the sports world in recent years.

It sucks for a teams fans but MLB would be lucky to be in the same ratings breath as the NFL and NBA.

                              I don't think it's hurting the leagues.

Anything that damages the legitimacy of what you're watching is hurting the league, whether the numbers reflect it or not.
