And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

It's not a joke. It's just that a lot of us are really looking forward to Barry Bonds getting his #25 jersey retired on August 11th in a contest between his former teams (Giants and Pirates).

                  Re: MLB Off-Topic

I know this question doesn't necessarily have a black-and-white answer, but in general on a strikeout, which do you guys think says more about the pitcher's stuff: a strikeout looking or a strikeout swinging?

I can see the downsides to both ends, the looking being that a pitcher could earn a strike from the umpire that was legitimately outside of the strike zone (even though that could still speak to the pitcher's command and respect of his stuff to the umpire), and the swinging being that it might say more about the batter's inability to hit the pitch than it does the pitcher's ability to make him miss.

Not to mention I might venture a guess that many swinging strikeouts are with pitches out of the zone (that's not backed up with any numbers at all) which means that's what the pitcher was going for anyway, and many looking strikeouts are likely as the batter is running at or near a three-ball count, possibly looking to coax out a walk or maybe even guess a certain pitch is coming and be fooled.

This just goes so many directions and it's likely that it also depends on the pitcher, like maybe Maddux was more impressive striking out batters looking whilst Sale would be swinging... but does anybody have one stance or the other? I'd like you hear your input, unless it really just is all the same and is totally situation/pitcher dependent.

To be honest, I actually keep forgetting. I'm glad that y'all remind me. I mean that honestly. Did I say I'm being honest about it?

I've always thought a strikeout looking is more badass.

Especially when a pitcher goes with a crazy movement pitch, the hitter sits on something else, sees the initial location, buckles on the break, then knows he's ****ed and just walks back without protest.

They're both awesome. Blowing a FB by someone is equally as impressive as buckling someone with a breaking ball

The high FB swing through is another one, I don't see a wrong answer in this game haha
