It is a player who was traded midseason and had a combined 30 30 season.

I should have gotten this one...can't believe I didn't. I wracked my brain and finally looked at the list; major "duh" moment.

Dang, I was going to guess Raul Mondesi for two different seasons (don't know if he did it for sure). I think he went to Toronto during the offseason though.

EDIT: I thought of this person before but dismissed it for a specific reason. Is it...

So I saw a 1st and 3rd situation yesterday where the runner successfully stole second base, I think maybe without a throw but I can't remember.

Anyway, strategically-speaking, I'm curious if this would work as a way to circumvent the now illegal 5-3 pickoff play (fake to 3rd and throw to 1st) but still try and catch the runner going:

With a righty pitching, why don't you just throw the pickoff to third base?

That way the third baseman can run in to cut the distance and maybe even start his momentum into a < 90 foot throw to second base, as opposed to delivering to the catcher where he has to stay behind the batter (and a batter has a chance to hit it), and make about a 130 foot throw to second base with that runner going.

I'm thinking it's legal since third base is occupied and you could argue that you were just trying to pick that runner off, even if you are completely unconcerned about that runner. Or is it illegal as long as you aren't holding the bag defensively? I'm curious about that.

I thought this was cool; as a result of the minor league's extra innings rule, the first ever "two pitch" inning was completed last night:

You can do that in the MLB as well with the automatic walk.

Pretty nifty though. I remember when Tim Worrell (maybe?) got a win for the Giants without throwing a pitch, by coming into the game and picking off a runner, then the Giants taking the lead the next inning for the closer afterward to get the save.

As someone already mentioned, this was Carlos Beltran in 2004. Interestingly, the two teams (Royals and Astros) are now in the same league.

New question and let's stick to the same topic. Name the only 2 members of the 30-50 club (30 HR and 50 SB). Hint: one of them is getting his number retired in San Francisco tonight as the Giants play the Pirates.

Yes it's legal to attempt to pickoff a runner at third lol.

I mean is it legal to throw a pickoff when your fielder isn't holding the bag?

Let's say for hypothetical purposes that you're playing a shift where the third baseman is about twenty feet away from the bag, even with a runner leading off from third. Are you still allowed to throw to the third baseman and say that you were attempting to pick him off? Do you have to lead him to the bag at all?

If not, then I think that is a good strategy to circumvent the now illegal 5-3 pickoff move.

I'm going to go with Bonds and Rickey, but since Henderson wasn't an answer to any of the previous questions I'm thinking he probably didn't ever get a 30 HR season.

Probably more recently, though. Mike Trout maybe?

You should be able to throw it anywhere you want, really. I doubt there's a rule saying you can't throw it to the center-fielder for no reason, if you really wanted. Unless MLB rules are even more uptight and bizarrely specific than I can imagine.

Bonds is one of them. Rickey Henderson is not the other.

I can say the other guy did it in 1987, the same year Strawberry and HoJo accomplished 30-30's for the Mets.

You are correct about Rickey never topping 30 HR. He hit 28 homers twice. Just 3 HR shy of being the only member of the 300-1400 club for his career.
