The internet may have not existed, but the backlash to the wild card and interleague play was pretty strong. Granted, the only people you really got to hear from were the Bob Costas/baseball writer types, but there was still an outcry about how this was the end of the game as we know it. The funny thing is the divisional setup was relatively new (in fact, we've now had the current set up for as long as the divisions had been place when the wild card came along) so it wasn't like major change hadn't happened recently.

I'd argue that no decade has seen change in baseball like the 1960's: expansion twice, schedule changed from 154 to 162 games, divisional play introduced, the mound lowered. That's a lot of change! The 1990's is probably close with the new divisions, the wild card, and expansion twice, but the 1960's wins.

I wonder how baseball has survived the last 60 years of decline predicted by the fans of the 1960s.

Yeah, everyone crying wolf about baseball dying reminds me of when the Suns were doing the hardcore Run N Gun but everyone was misguidedly bitching about "defense!" (when it was rebounding that was the issue) and then the Suns finally gave in to all the dumb manufactured criticism and got rid of D'Antoni and the team went into the ****ten and was practically castrated while the future of basketball morphed into what the Warriors and Rockets, etc became.

Everyone keeps manufacturing **** about what's wrong with baseball trying their hardest to change everything about the sport and baseball is buying into it with all these dumb changes and garbage regulations that are a detriment to what the sport actually is.

I'm sure people who were alive back then hate the current game. Just like Manfred.

So turns out Marcus Stroman cropped his puppy's ears today...I looked at the pic and it's disgusting. I have no love for the man anymore. You can be immature and say/do stupid things but animal cruelty is a line that can't be crossed in my books.

I'm not gonna throw around any accusations, but sometimes people do that if they're going to get into dog-fighting.

Hopefully that's the actual reasoning and not anything bad.

Stroman is the type of guy who embraces being different.

But regardless, you know Jays management probably isn't too happy having a guy like that around.

I won't disagree that cropping a dog's ears makes no sense unless there's a valid medical reason or something but we still live in a time where that's not common knowledge.

A lot of people do it because they either think they are supposed to or it looks better / maintains the breed's character . People still cut dog tails when there's no real reason to other than because it's always been that way for certain breeds.

I'd give Stroman a pass here without more info.

Both (ears and tail) are illegal here in the UK unless it's a working dog. It's a moronic thing to do whatever way you look at it, he's essentially got plastic surgery on a pet.

As it should be everywhere. But when you have the American kettle club or whatever it's called supporting it, it's a hard fight in America.

Yeah, I came off all hot about it but I can see very little rationalization for it. It's painful to the dog and is inhumane in my eyes, unless as you say; it's for a medical reason.

Interesting line from Jays president Mark Shapiro:
There’ll be a time, Shapiro says, when “payroll will outpace our revenues.”

Given that the Jays revenues last year were $274M, could this just be a line with someone higher up in an organization trying to make it seem like players are paid so much already (and shouldn't be complaining about a "poor market"), or will there ever be a point where teams payrolls could come close to their revenue line?

I don't buy it though. Even seeing Jays with a 200M payroll seems unlikely in near future. Player expenses last year were 180M, and that was with all the big money contracts like Donaldson, Tulo, Martin. This year there's no Donaldson, next year no more of Martins contract and Tulos drops (and almost all gone by 2021).
