    Re: MLB Off-Topic

    My ideas regarding schedules:

Season length reduced to 154 games

WC matchup is a 3-game series rather than 1 game.

All-star break begins on a Wednesday and resumes the following Wednesday.

Push the All-Star game to Sunday evening with all-star festivities on Saturday. HOF commencement is the next day, Monday.

Looking at current standings, there's a possibility that 1-2 teams missing the playoffs will have a better record than a division winner.

Mariners currently at 74-57, Indians at 74-56
      Phillies at 70-61,DBacks at 72-59

Maybe contact will be valued again.
Pretty sure today's hitters aren't consciously devaluing contact; they just can't make contact because everyone's throwing 95 these days.

              I know nobody cares...

But this is my bobblehead collection. One side is all Braves, the other is/will be the rest of MLB. I want to get at least 1 of every MLB team but I'm very picky as I want it each item to be cool and and be a HOF/great player.

I'm really really proud of this, anybody that comes to my house immediately comments on it.20180828_212815.jpg20180828_212700.jpg20180828_212647.jpg

Can anyone give me a very abridged description of how the Fangraphs defence rating/value works? Because they currently have JD Martinez having the 9th biggest negative value for the year, which is surely wrong as he barely plays in the outfield? or do you automatically lose points for DHing, because Nelson Cruz has like a -11 and he's played maybe 5 games in the field this year.

Pretty surprised to see 4 time gold glover Eric Hosmer as having the 5th worst fielding value in baseball as well.

I can't speak on the metric and I'm not going to state my uninformed opnion on Hosmer's fielding, but the GG award is the least credible one that I can think of.

When one player is making diving catches, another player might be running that ball down with ease. When one player is making outfield assists, another player is not bothered to be tested because he would have hosed you.

It also seems to value household names more than others, especially those with some offensive prowess alongside everything else. Brandon Crawford had magnificent defensive years but didn't get votes when his bat wasn't woke. Suddenly the first year he wins a silver slugger, it's as if people started to recognize that he can catch and throw a ball as well and they reward him with a GG.

I do wish those other metrics you speak of were more heavily considered. For all I know, they may be at this point. In the past though it was all about who the flashiest player was out there, which I get and went along with... but if Hosmer is a four-time GG award winner and has that number, either age has caught up to him or he got a big bit of bad luck (and they say defense doesn't slump), or maybe they were a little more undeserved than we once thought.

The whole list seems a bit odd tbh, there are a lot of DH and 1B with big negatives so it might be not just defence but a scaling thing based on what is expected/demanded of the position? No idea, that's kind of my main problem with all these advanced stats and the like, people just quote them but it's pretty tough to find what on earth they really mean and how much weight they really have. (for example, the main reason I was even on FG was that Joey Wendle apparently leads the AL rookies in fWAR and I was curious as to how that really could be the case)

Gold Gloves are voted on by managers and coaches. How much thought do you think they put into their choices? 5 seconds? 10?

Yes, FanGraphs bakes the positional adjustment into the "Def" stat. DH takes a massive hit.

For a really abridged version, try clicking on the stat header and it usually gives you a sentence or 2 about it.

                                According to some history, sure.

Though I'll admit I thought it was the same voting pool that brings together the MVP and such.
