Unfortunately for me my lasting memory will always be the giant safety helmet he wore. I'm not even critical of him for wearing it, but they really couldn't come up with a better aesthetic helmet than that?

It's always in my mind that the NFL can do all the safety helmet technology they want, but they don't want to have guys wearing helmets like that

(poster note: that's just my conjecture and I'm not trying to bring NFL topics here, even though I did kinda do exactly that, but anyway...)

      Whatever happened to those helmets?

I thought all new players were supposed to wear them by some year that already passed.

I don't think the players union ever made it a requirement, it's still up to individuals. There's also a different tech that some pitchers are wearing. It's an insert that fits into one side of the cap and isn't really noticeable.

          Rules talk:

When Venditte came into the game tonight, Vasgersian brought up the rule that a pitcher must declare his handedness for an at-bat prior to it and must commit to it for its entirety. He believes the rule should allow flexibility much like a switch-hitting batter is allowed to do. I am almost for what he is saying, and think it would be extra interesting if a pitcher threw lefty more so for the purpose of a runner on first and then if he stole second base then the pitcher switched to righty... the possibilities are endless.

Then they stated that this rule was in place because of what he did in the minor leagues (switching up hands during an at-bat), and that is true. What wasn't mentioned is that that batter was a switch-hitter, and any time he would switch hands the batter would switch sides. It became an endless controversy where ultimately the batter had to bat against the pitcher's same handedness only to get out and lose the game. This is why the rule is in place. It's unfortunate, but the batter is simply granted more flexibility than the pitcher here, and there really isn't anything to do about it.

          Fantasy baseball strategy talk:

So I'm advancing to the championship week of my league. I was the #1 seed going into the playoffs. As it turns out, there were many advantages to scrumming for that #1 spot.

The first and obvious one is the Bye week, but not because I had a chance of losing out, instead because I could pick up the pieces of desperate other teams fighting to advance so they can accumulate enough numbers. I just got to sit pretty and dump those who I wasn't as concerned for.

The next thing was that a tie would still let me go through in the semi-final round, and I used that to my advantage. I felt the worst I could do today was tie, so I decided to unload some players I didn't need for the sake of this upcoming week.

My opponent has enough closers to give himself saves numbers, so I figured I wouldn't compete against him there. Instead I just have a crap ton of starters, so much so that if I didn't make a single move the entire week I would still have eighteen starts among them! I know this guarantees me nothing for ERA and WHIP, and there are even two matchups where starters face each other... but I still like my odds with wins and strikeouts, and I feel like I have a decent pitching core compared to what my opponent might push for when it comes to scrounging for starters during the week should he so choose to. Of course, he already has an elite reliever crew to help bring down some numbers, but we'll see how things go.

I'm also deciding to go without a catcher for the week. The entire season they have been more of a detriment than a help, in that they barely would get me any numbers and very often would take days off. I'd rather use that spot for an extra offensive player on the Monday/Thursday off or for another pitcher. My opponent is going with ten offensive guys, and has most of the year... he just deals with it when they don't play, but I'm hoping that will help play in my hands in a big way.

Fingers crossed! I'll let you know how the experiment goes. Knowing my luck I'll probably only get three wins out of these 18 (probably will become 24 with the adds through the week) starts, heh.

When a team changes Minor League affiliates, how does that...work?

Now that the Las Vegas 51s are affiliated with the A's, does all of Nashville's roster now go to Las Vegas, and the Mets prospects go to whoever their new AAA team is?

Yup, our local minor league team, the Tides, used to be affiliated with the Mets (was awesome when David Wright was coming up as he's from here) but switched to the Orioles and it's not awesome anymore. I can only imagine how the people who followed the Mets because of the pipeline felt when the switch hit.

Affiliate switches don't go into effect until the next season, so those teams will finish out the year as is. Though the AAA season is in the playoffs so if neither of those teams made it, they're already working on the change

Yes, Nashville's roster will now come to Las Vegas next season. The 51's roster now goes to Syracuse (Mets now own that AAA team) and the Syracuse roster now goes to Fresno, the Nationals new AAA affiliate. Fresno's roster now goes to Round Rock. Colorado Springs (which no longer has a team) will move their roster to San Antonio.

Teams are trying to do that now. Examples being Syracuse with the Mets, Houston with Round Rock, SF with Sacramento.

Teams are trying to make the affiliates more travel friendly. There are a few that don't make sense like the Nationals with Fresno now.

The A's now having AAA in in Vegas may also be sign of things to come. There's been talk that the A's could also move to Vegas if they too can't find a stadium deal.

So there's a topic on another board I go to where we were discussing how you could probably watch a couple old baseball playoff games over the course of one of the games in this upcoming postseason. This got me to muse about the new mound visits rule. It's pretty much gone by without a hitch and the hand wringing at the beginning of the year disappeared (I remember some broadcasts would actually show the amount of visits but that to has dropped off the radar) Now though, I think this is where the rule is going to come into focus. We all KNOW that managers, pitcher coaches and ESPECIALLY catchers LOVE to go out to the mound during playoff games and this is where the rubber hits the road. I could easily see a situation where a team runs out of mound visits over the course of a game either in 9 innings or the course of an extra inning game.

This is something that bears study while watching the playoffs this fall. You guys think i'm onto something here?
