    Re: MLB Off-Topic

So Michael Kay did an interview with the guys that wrote the upcoming “Inside the Empire” book that goes into the inner workings of the Yankees. It’s about 45 min long and really fascinating. Bunch of stuff I had no idea about like Jeter and Cashmans animosity for each other, how George almost sold the team to the Dolans in the late 90’s and in return would have become the managing partner for the Knicks and Rangers [emoji15]. And this relates to the discussion earlier about Minor league salaries. Apparently the Yankees are the only team in baseball that pays for a college education for every single player it signs.

Def check out the interview if you can. Cant wait for the book to come out next week, seems like these guys got way more access to the inner workings than even they thought they were gonna get.

Would've been nice if you offered us a link or something but that's some very interesting stuff there. This sounds like it's going to be a really good book.

I can't imagine Dolan owning the Yankees....That would be a disaster of epic proportions. The crazy thing is, I learned that around that time frame (1996-97) Dolan was in the running to buy the Jets!

Dolan running Yankees would be a good thing....for the rest of baseball.

          I would take this trade.

Jets would suck just as bad as they already do.

          Knicks would be better.

                What's not pretty about it?

I think most of it confirms what Yankees fans that pay attention already knew about the internal workings of the team.

                I don't see much being a revelation.

George wanted to fire Torre multiple times? Yeah no kidding. I'm sure there were championship seasons George wanted to fire Torre in June.

Everyone knew Girardi was a dead man walking with his attitude and approach. Fans hated him just as much as the players did. It was clear no one liked playing for him. And once baseball became an analytical sport, it was clear Girardi was good as gone because he was too old school for Cashman.

Boone not making decisions? We all called that before Boone was even hired. We knew it wouldn't be a big time manager but someone new who would have to accept being a rah rah guy.

Cashman has always feuded with Jeter. I don't know the exact reason why but there's a lot of info to guess. Jeter at some point clearly felt he was the biggest thing in New York. And a guy like Cashman who likes to act like the quiet type will always look for an edge. He did it during contract talks using Jeter's brand against him (Jeter knew he couldn't leave the Yankees and sign somewhere else. It would hurt his legacy. Cashman didn't have to care. The Yankees are bigger than Jeter) and everyone not living under a rock knew he took Jeter to the cleaners in the Stanton trade. Of course Cashman loved that.

The last several years have clearly showed Cashman's opinion of the free agent market. Cashman went out and fielded a team with Vernon Wells, Travis Hafner, Kevin Youkilis, Ichiro and Lyle Overbay coming off a division winning 95 win season. Plus watching that awful team finish over .500 had to have juiced Cashman and the analytics team into thinking they were indeed masterminds of finding undervalued talent.

The only thing I don't think anyone knew was that Dolan deal. I want more details on that. What would have happened after George's death? Would Hal have taken over? Really curious.

                  Re: MLB Off-Topic

What's not pretty? I'm not a Yankees fan, so how would I know this stuff? Most of this was news to me. I'll just go point-by-point with what I took issue with.

                  1. The fact that everyone in baseball has to get on board with analytics or else. Just shows me there's no diversity of thought or approach anymore. That's what's really ruining baseball in my opinion. Not pitch clocks or mound visits. The game is so homogeneous, it makes it incredibly dull. I have watched less and less baseball as I've gotten older because of this. The only differences between teams are the jerseys.

                  2. Having the stats guys up in Boone's craw every day has to be annoying as hell for him. Then they'll throw him under the bus if he "goes rogue" and doesn't do what they say if it doesn't work out. Maybe he doesn't care, but I'd quit if I was him. Tell Cashman or one of his cronies to do it.

                  3. Brian Cashman looks like a sensitive egotistical ***. He got mad because Girardi called out Gary Sanchez's terrible defense and was basically triggered by all the years of George Steinbrenner holding him accountable and now that he's gone, had carte blanche to fire Girardi because of that. He could use the "not connecting with players" card to justify it, but it was a power play.

He has all this authority and power without the kind of resume to claim he deserves it. I know a lot of people will disagree but the Yankees have every advantage in the sport and this guy has built 1 WS winner from scratch in 20 years, back in 2009. So how good is he really? He wouldn't have a single WS appearance if he hadn't worked for the Yankees and taken over a stacked team that was built for him.

                  4. I've always felt Girardi was one of the better managers in the game and did a good job of managing pitcher usage and getting more out of lesser talented teams. To see him get canned because of some bum's unchecked ego getting hurt was probably the most damning thing in here for.

It was confirmed Jeter was the biggest thing in NY in the winter of 2003 at the latest. There was 0 reason that Rodriguez should've been the one to move from SS when he got to NY. Rodriguez was easily the best SS his generation and arguably the best of all time. But because Jeter was the face of the Yankees if ARod wanted to have any chance of being liked in NY he needed to move from his position.

You should see if you can send that spreadsheet to Fangraphs or baseball reference. I think they'd love something like that. You might even get a few bucks for doing so.
