It's important to note that I'm not saying one could light up at their desk but yes, anyone was allowed to step outside and smoke or throw in a dip at their desk.

I'll end with this: my whole point of bringing this up is an attempt to break the cycle of tobacco use in baseball. Legal or not, personal right or not, the fact that the game is so closely with tobacco is a bad thing in my mind. It infiltrates the youth level and permeates from there. I took my first dip my Freshman year of high school, and luckily didn't stick with it. But I know plenty of 14-16 year olds that go through 2+ cans per week and have no grasp of the long-term consequences (a common trait among teenagers).

Anything that anyone, lawmaker with "better things to do" or random Joe, will be supported by me 100%.
I don't agree but fair enough.

Couldn't we attribute that to teenagers being teenagers? Hell, I think I even tried chewing tobacco at one point and it wasn't because I saw baseball players doing it.

There are no more tobacco ads, and really a lot less guys in the league using it. Half the time you can't even tell specifically if a guy has chew in his mouth or seeds.

As kehlis said, it is a slippery slope and I don't think the lawmakers or baseball should be in the business of regulating what players use or put within their body, especially when that substance is legal in the US and not banned by the CBA. We all have the right to choose what we put/use in our body, they are no different.

I can't see how anyone could have the authority to say you can't chew tobacco. That's downright bs. Your a man you make your own decisions. My friends step dad has a hole in his stomach because he drank 4 or 5 cokes a day, soda us pretty terrible for you too. Should Manfred outlaw soda too?

I mean where do you draw the line, personally I'm f'ing sick of them changing something every year just for the sake of change, leave the game alone.

Involving the government in something like regulating ball players using dip in MLB stadiums is nuts. I could understand saying teams and MLB stadiums having regulations against it as individuals...maybe that could work? Then again, would that hold up in a court of law? The MLBPA would certainly fight against it. And dip has no side effects to cause an individual to become impaired or harm others around them unwillingly like cigarettes and alcohol do. Alcohol sales past a certain time having restrictions and banning cigarettes/cigars I get, but dip? I don't know if it's possible.

I frankly don't care what anyone does to themselves by their own choice. I will say that if I'm reading between the lines correctly I don't disagree with you but will just leave it at that.

It may be standard in Colorado now but it is not standard throughout the country.

I have never been at a workplace (several states, including Colorado Springs for a brief period) that limits either cigarette smoking or tobacco....

If they weren't worried about drug tests there would be nothing stopping players from eating pot brownies so they can have at it.

Surely. Not sure where I suggested otherwise since tobacco doesn't provide the same affect as alcohol.

It's a habit that can actually be utilized while playing. It doesn't mean it's unique to baseball players though. There are plenty of football and hockey players that chew regularly off the field.

No. That really isn't standard throughout the country.

I've worked for many companies in my life. Never once have I worked with one who told their employees they weren't allowed to smoke.

I work for the government where image is everything and we can smoke as long as it's outside 50 feet from a door or at the back of the boat when we are underway.

Wow, you talk about somebody that has a long history with the game. I don't know his story too well, but we're loosing them so fast now...

As for the political discussion above, I can't wait until Baseball actually starts so that we can get away from that BS. That's why football has become so borderline unwatchable; you can't go five minutes without talking about social issues or politics or whatever.

He was my Grandfathers favorite player. It's too bad he didn't get into the HOF last November.

R.I.P. to Minnie Minoso, before being known as a bit of a PR stunt guy he was actually a really good player for a lot of years. Nowadays he's best known for a couple stunts he did for Bill Veeck in '76 and '80 where he played a handful of games at age 50 and 54.

Yes. If we can avoid the footballification of baseball, that would fantastic.

I had heard something regarding a baseball player and a fatal accident back in 2010 when I was going to school in CA, but I never looked into who it was until I saw this today.
